at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is also the founder of SpecDrum. Matt will be presenting “Two Drummers, One Groove: Ice the Cake with Percussion in Your Big Band.” Are you unsure what do with a second drummer in jazz band? This clinic will give insight about instruments, rhythms, and grooves to provide a solid and appropriate foundation in your band.
Rob Babel is currently the Director of Bands at Ft. Zumwalt North High School in O’Fallon, MO. Under his direction, the Ft. Zumwalt North Jazz Band has performed multiple times at the Midwest Clinic and MMEA. Rob is highly sought after as a clinician around the country. He will be presenting “Programming Your Jazz Band for Success.” This clinic will focus on rehearsal techniques to get the most out of your jazz band. Among the topics covered will be chart selection, tailoring each chart to fit your band, and incorporating the warm- ups to teach chord changes in all keys.
What would MMEA be without performances from fine ensembles from around the state? Lindenwood University Jazz Orchestra, directed by Matt Hoormann, and North County High School, directed by Dobie Carroll, will offer performances, which will blow you away! [See pages 33-57 for a full list of performances.]
In addition to the fine clinics and performances already mentioned, I encourage you to learn more about the Missouri Association for Jazz Education (MOAJE). MOAJE will be sponsoring a jam session, a reading session, and an All-State clinician, Matt Wilson! Mr. Wilson is a gifted composer, bandleader, producer and educator. Do yourself a favor. . .visit one of his All-State rehearsals and take time to hear the performance of the All-State Jazz Ensemble! Make plans to attend MMEA!
