North County High School Concert Choir Allyn Rizo, Conductor

2:15 p.m.

The North County High School Concert Choir is an auditioned ensemble that has built a strong reputation of excellence for itself over the past several years, earning consistent 1 Ratings at the MSHSAA State Music Festivals. This will be their first appearance at the MMEA Convention. Many of their members earn All-District and All-State Choir honors and are involved in Solo and Small Ensemble Festivals in the Spring. They are a group of extremely hard working young people, coming from various backgrounds and musical knowledge to create an art that is worth hearing.

Allyn Rizo is a 2007 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, where she received a Bachelor’s of Music Education degree. She is currently in her 10th year of teaching, enjoying nine of those years with the North County School District. Allyn serves as the MMEA East Central Secretary and Treasurer, the MCDA East Central Representative, and was recently named as the 2015-2016 Outstanding East Central Director by MCDA. She resides in Desloge, MO with her husband and two children, Mia and Leo.

Lee’s Summit Wet High School Wind Ensemble Cliſton Turmond, Shawn Harel, Conductors

2:45p.m.

The Lee’s Summit West band program has three concert bands, a percussion class, a jazz band, and the marching band (Titan Pride). The Wind Ensemble (formerly the Symphonic Band) consistently receives the highest ratings at State Contest and has performed at Chicago Symphony Hall and Lincoln Center in New York. In March this year, we will perform at the Kauffman Center and, again, at Chicago Symphony Hall. This is the second invitation to perform at MMEA for this ensemble, with the first being in 2012. We, again, are extremely honored to perform at this year’s convention.

Clifton D. Thurmond has been teaching in the Lee’s Summit R7 School District since the beginning of his career in 1999. Along with LSWHS, Mr. Thurmond teaches beginning band at two elementary schools in the district. Mr. Thurmond earned a Bachelors from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1998 and Masters from UMKC in 2007. Shawn Harrel comes to Lee’s Summit West with a Bachelors from Missouri State University and a Masters in Jazz Studies, with an emphasis in arranging and composition, from the University of North Texas. Mr. Harrel teaches at Lee’s Summit West High School and Summit Technology Academy.
