Some of My Favorites
The theme for the 2017 MMEA In-Service Workshop/Conference is, “The Language of Music.” In keeping with our chosen conference theme, I thought that it would be fun to share some of my all-time favorite choral octavos that also have fantastic texts! Text is the very first thing that I look at when choosing new music. I’m game for just about any language, but the words, whatever the language may be, must be meaningful (although not necessarily serious) and set well.
Here are some of my favorites:
SA, SSA, and SSAA “Gloria” from the Heiligmesse, edited by Suchoff “Dance in the Rain,” by David S. Gaines “You Cannot Lose My Love,” arranged by LaBarr “Under the Willow,” arranged by LaBarr “Ein Hennleinn Weiss,” by Scandello, ed. by Greyson “Weep No More,” David N. Childs ‘I Am Not Yours,’ David N. Childs “In the Sweet By and By,” arranged by Hall “Hark, Hear the Harps Eternal,” by Alice Parker “Nuit D’etoiles,” arranged by Raines “Tiger, Tiger,” by Sherry Porterfield “Egyetem, Begyetem,” by Zoltan Kodály
SATB, SAB, SATB w/ Divisi “Ave Verum Corpus,” Mozart, CPDL “Jabberwocky”, by Sam Pottle “Fly,” arranged by LaBarr “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” arranged by Shaw “Il et Bel est Bon,” edited by Greyson “The Awakening,” by Joseph Martin “Zigeunerleben Op. 29, No. 3,” by Robert Schumann
“Cantique de jean Racine, Op. 11,” by Gabriel Fauré
“Soon I Will Be Done,” arranged by Dawson “Walk Together Children,” arranged by Hogan “He Never Failed Me Yet,” by Robert Ray “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name,” by Tom Fettke
14 MISSOURI SCHOOL MUSIC | Volume 71, Number 2
Our Conference and In-Service Workshop will be here before we know it! We are so excited to present selected choral ensembles in performance! See pages 33-57 for a full list of ensemble places, times, biographies, and pictures.
It is particularly interesting to see that the committee has selected two middle school/junior high choirs. One of our younger choirs will be a junior high school men’s group, and one will be a middle school mixed choir. Our high school ensembles will include a 3A women’s choir, and a 5A women’s chorale. We will hear a high school 4A concert choir, and 5A concert choir. Our high school performing ensembles will also include two 5A high school choral ensembles. We will have two outstanding collegiate choirs performing. The selection committee worked for more than twelve hours and came to the decision that the choirs selected would perform with quality and heart. Hopefully, there will be something for everyone!
