Making their first appearance at MMEA, the Lindenwood University Jazz Orchestra is the audition-only large jazz ensemble at Lindenwood University and features a combination of music majors and non-majors. Since 2012, the Jazz Orchestra has performed at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Jazz Education Network’s JENerations Jazz Festival, and the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival. They made their St. Louis “Jazz at the Bistro” debut in 2016. They are committed to a forward- looking approach to jazz in all forms. Creativity, innovation, and evolution, coupled with a firm sense of tradition, form the guiding principles of this ensemble.
Dr. Matt Hoormann is the director of the Lindenwood University Jazz Orchestra as well as the trombone instructor and music business advisor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. Dr. Hoormann holds a Bachelor and Master of Music from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a Doctor of Musical Arts from University of California, Los Angeles. A product of the MMEA All-State High School Jazz Band, Dr. Hoormann has been at Lindenwood University since 2010.
NorthWinds Symphonic Band Danny Watring,Conductor

The NorthWinds Symphonic Band was founded in 2004 as “an ensemble of exceptional musicians, assembled to rehearse and perform high quality music to a wide variety of audiences.” This mission statement remains the central focus of the band. NorthWinds has performed twice at the Missouri Bandmasters Association summer convention. They have shared concerts with the Fountain City Brass Band, Missouri Western State University Symphonic Winds, St. Louis Wind Symphony, and other
community and school music ensembles. In January 2011, the ensemble performed at the 73rd annual Missouri Music Educators Association In-Service workshop/conference. They are excited to be returning this year.
Danny Watring is a founding member of the NorthWinds Symphonic Band. Retiring in 2016, he finished his 30 years of music education in the Grandview School District. He has served as vice-president for the KC Metro Concert and Jazz Bands, Missouri Association of Jazz Education, and MMEA - Jazz division. Danny is the founder of the Greater Kansas City Middle School Solo/Ensemble Festival. He has conducted bands overseas as a staff member of the Missouri Ambassadors of Music and is active as an adjudicator throughout Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Oklahoma. Danny is currently employed by the Springfield Music Company.
