Reed Academy Singers Daniel Gutierez, Conductor

The Reed Academy Singers is an ensemble selected of 45 7th and 8th grade singers. Under the direction of Mr. Gutierrez, the Reed Academy Choirs have won their division at the Worlds of Fun Festival of Choirs for the past three years, been featured at music educator conferences and university performances, opened for world-renowned lecturers, and have been very active within their local community. In addition to being selected to perform at MMEA, this choir has also been selected to perform at the National ACDA conference this upcoming March. The choir is accompanied by Jeanie Raney.


Daniel Gutierrez, a native of Long Island, New York, is the choral director at Reed Academy as well as the artistic director for Boys Choir of Springfield, Missouri. Daniel is an active clinician and presenter throughout the state of Missouri. He was named “Springfield Hometown Hero” by a local TV station, was finalist for Springfield Public Schools “Teacher of the Year” in 2014 and 2015, and most recently a quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY National Music Education Award. Daniel’s choirs have been invited to perform at both MMEA and the National ACDA Conference.


Wydown Middle School Wind Ensemble Jennifer Shenberger, Michael Kanaan, Conductors

The Wydown Middle School Wind Ensemble is in its ninth year of existence and functions as an extension of the Clayton School District Band Program. The Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group of 7th and 8th graders who have a desire to rehearse and perform challenging literature in addition to their daily middle school band curriculum. The ensemble meets regularly once a week before school, and is open to all wind and percussion students who can successfully perform the audition requirements. Students who earn membership must consistently demonstrate musical proficiency, as well as exhibit good character traits and academic achievement.


Jennifer Shenberger and Michael Kanaan co-founded the Wydown MS Wind Ensemble nine years ago to offer students extended opportunities to study advanced literature. Ms. Shenberger is in her 10th year at Clayton and 24th year of teaching overall. She holds a BME from Southwest Baptist University and a MM in Conducting from Missouri State University. Mr. Kanaan has been with Clayton 13 years and has been teaching a total of 26 years. He holds a BME from Central Missouri University and a M.Ed. from Jones University. Both directors have continuing education hours at VanderCook and are active adjudicators and clinicians.
