What makes the modern-looking abode so unique is,well, its uniqueness – the hotel,which is a part of the Marriott chain, is its own brand category – The Autograph Collection - with this one being number 92 in the series. What makes an Autograph hotel so special is its individuality; there’s no cookie-cutter look or feel to the place with the proper- ty visually embracing its waterfront situa- tion. I had never stayed at an Autograph hotel (actually, I hadn’t even heard of one before), and I was most impressed by this venue’s own not-like-anything-else design and style.


“And we pride ourselves on our intimate relationship with the Academy next door,” Brooke continued. I looked through wide windows toward what appeared to be a never-ending series of limestone colored buildings just across the river. I’d be over there for a tour soon enough.


As I checked-in and then entered my nicely-sized room, I was immediately struck by the huge amenities box waiting for me. This wasn’t a special“comp for the writer”or even a snack basket with individually-priced (and exorbitantly marked-up) items. From the healthy snacks and assorted treats to a nice bottle of wine and a couple of spring waters,each Autograph Collection hotel surprises its guests with the opposite of what is expected,which is a part of why Brooke was so right: There really is nothing like this place!


(Suggestion: Request one of the 24 water- front rooms, or better yet, one of the 16 with a balcony. The crystalline view is simply stunning. The extra cost will be worth it.)


The hotel’s on-site restaurant,Pusser’s Caribbean Grille,has the only waterside dining in downtown Annapolis. The aquatic setting through arched windows is a perfect match for the restaurant’s tropical cuisine and its sultry moodiness.


Soon, I watched as a brigade of arrow- straight, stern-faced plebes (the nickname first-year students) from the Naval Academy soldiered on by in their stan- dard-issued dress whites along the
