This will appeal to: Artists who are preparing to book shows or tour and want to get the most out of their efforts
What: A panel discussion with leading Canadian booking agents and self-booked artists.
In the new economics of Canadian music, professional booking agents are the holy grail for mid-career and established artists. Tour coordi- nation is now vital, as live shows rise in importance and album sales diminish. However, until an artist reaches a significant level in their career, they are left with the exhausting and sometimes intimidating task of booking their own tours. This panel will offer insight into the world of self-booking, and give independent artists the opportunity to learn from those doing it daily.
Eli Klein: Klein is from Edmonton, but has called Toronto home since 2006. Over the past 20 years, he’s been a concert promoter, talent agent, club buyer, artist manager, tour manager, radio host, event producer, publicist and currently, is a community manager at an app called BUNZ.
Spencer Shewen: As Associate Artistic Director and Festival Manager at Riverfest Elora, Shewen has played an integral role in guiding the festival through a period of rapid growth. He hosts Dead Radio, Love; a new music series which has seen sold out shows by many Canadian acts. This year will see Dead Radio, Love expand to become a fully-fledged label and man- agement company. Spencer oversaw the Fortnight Music Series for almost 10 years; sat on the Board Of Directors for the Hillside Festival and CFRU; worked as Artistic Director and Event Manager for 100 Mile Riot festival; owned and operated SunnyLane Records; worked as Talent Buyer and Event Manager for The Albion Hotel; and more.
Michael Dawson: Michael’s experience includes tour booking, artist management, marketing and promotion, and sponsorship management. Dawson spent five years serving as the Artistic Director of the Culture Exchange, where he booked and/or promoted over 400 concerts/year, before moving on to become the talent buyer for a number of venues in Western Canada. He is also the Artistic Director of the Gateway Music Fes- tival. With Library Voices, Michael has performed at countless national and international events. Dawson also previously owned and operated Young Soul Records, part of the EMI Associated Labels Division, releasing more than a dozen albums by Sask. artists.
