REWIND RECENT EVENTS
BREAKOUT WEST AND WESTERN CANADIAN MUSIC AWARDS OCTOBER 13-16/16, REGINA SK
This year was especially important for SaskMusic’s involvement, with BreakOut West (
www.breakoutwest.ca) happening in our home prov- ince. SaskMusic had a substantial amount of participation in host committee activities, assisting with marketing and promotion locally, volunteers, coordination of the Mini BreakOut West (Family-friendly day), Creative Sask.’s VIP opening reception, the SaskMusic industry/ panelist host party, and more.
The conference offered a wealth of information to musicians/art- ists/industry members at varying stages of development, and we were pleased to see many members out taking advantage of the programming.
The Western Canadian Music Awards Show was held at Casino Regina on October 13, moving into a position to kick off BreakOut West’s 14th year. Performing on the show were Colin James (this year’s Hall of Fame inductee, originally from Sask.), and Rosie and the Riveters.
The BreakOut West Festival took place at 11 venues October 14-15, with every genre from pop to country, rock to hip hop, jazz, classical, children’s music and everything in between. Many of the genre-specif- ic Western Canadian Music Awards were presented during these fes- tival showcases. EUROPEAN MUSIC MARKETS PANELS, ROUNDTABLES, ONE-ON-ONES, SHOWCASES OCTOBER 11-12/16, REGINA SK
With Danny Keir, Lynette Mayer, Ro Cemm, Jazz Monroe, Danny Simons. Moderated by Mike Dawson.
Breaking Borders has become an annual event for SaskMusic, alter- nating each year between Regina and Saskatoon in the days prior to BreakOut West.
Preparing for international touring can be an intimidating process for any artist. After hard work building an audience at home, taking the plunge into the unknowns of international markets can be challeng- ing on a number of levels! However, countless opportunities can be waiting beyond our borders: new markets, performance opportuni- ties, networking prospects, and growing your brand with the possibil- ity of one day performing on the global stage.
SaskMusic was thrilled to bring several UK and European export lead- ers to our province, offering exclusive access to these sought-after delegates who then participated in panels at the 2016 BreakOut West Conference in Regina.
Whether you’re an emerging artist with the intention of working to- wards international markets, or an established act looking for some tips and tricks to improve your international tour results, this event was geared to answer questions and offer insight on how to make the most of your international tours. The morning panel covered a variety of international export points including tools and techniques for getting you to an export-ready status, and developing a solid ex- port strategy to get your music into the international marketplace. Our panelists then did round table breakout sessions during the af- ternoon. On the evening of day 1, we added a showcase component, with the Johnny McCuaig Band, Etienne Fletcher, and Bears in Ha- zenmore performing in a public and industry showcase on the eve- ning. Day 2 saw the panlelists taking private consults with artists who pre-registered.

This role involved all elements of international music industry interaction and business development in both practical and creative spaces.
