SASKATCHEWAN ALBUMS & EPS
RELEASED
ALEX BENT + THE EMPTINESS: Dead, In The Water Introspective and affecting, this electronic dark-pop album was created by young Saskatoon singer-songwriter Alex Bent, with guest musicians rounding out the tracks. It was written during a difficult period in Bent’s life, with musical work bring- ing a source of comfort. “Influences as diverse as Nine Inch Nails, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Johnny Cash, and Loverboy (you read that right) are everywhere, but so is Bent’s distinctive, velvety croon. He is a captivating vocalist – one of the best I’ve ever heard – so it’s hard not to get drawn into the emotional abyss of ‘Voicemail’ and ‘In The Morning.’ ” -

ELIZA MARY DOYLE: It Ain’t What It Seems Doyle’s debut full-length takes a more serious and intimate approach than some of her past work on stage as a high-ener- gy banjo player. Eliza plays banjo, guitar, dobro, and sings on the album, which encompasses an array of styles and emo- tion, ranging from boot stompin’, banjo kickin’, kitchen party tunes to vulnerable, impetuous, heart-strung ballads, but all within the indie folk/roots genre, with country and bluegrass undertones. Doyle’s interest in people’s lives - and specifically, in their untold stories of hardships, trials, and tribulations - is beautifully captured on this album. Recorded at: Stackwall Studios, Big River. Produced by: Eliza Doyle, Paula McGuigan, and Liza Holder. More:

JIM GALLOWAY: Fly Away Veteran guitarist/songwriter Galloway sees his second solo EP, Fly Away, as a continuation of his first full length, Good Time, released in 2014. This new EP is a little heavier than its predecessor with Jim experimenting with different drum sounds, guitar textures and a different approach to vocal phrasing. The EP sends the listener back in time with a hint of vintage undertones you might find in the early days of the Doobie Brothers or the Eagles, all while seamlessly giving the music a modern twist. Recorded at: home studio, Oxbow. Produced by: Jim Galloway. More:

SEVEN STRAIT: Rise From The Ashes Rock group Seven Strait, consisting of Dustin Penny (vocals, guitar), Staffan Osterlind (lead guitar) and Matt O’Rourke (drums), has dropped its first full-length studio album. The album’s eleven tracks feature screaming guitar licks, groovy bass lines and a hard rockin’ beat combined with edgy, and full-of-attitude vocals, to create a solid debut from this Saskatoon band. Included on the album is also a reworked version of the famed Johnny Cash hit ‘Folsom Prison’ which shows off a heavier metal arrangement of the classic track. Recorded at: NuVintage Sudios, Toronto and Relics Recording Studio, Saskatoon. Produced by: Mark S. Berry. More:

WHITEBOY SLIM: Diversity National award-winning blues artist Whiteboy Slim returns with more high-energy songs; 12 tracks of classic and original blues (and an occasional trip into reggae, rockabilly, and jazz), plus two bonus tracks. Everything on the album was re- corded live - in studio and at gigs - by producer Larry Gusaas. The recording was made with the ‘one-man rhythm section’ Dustin Bowyer, playing bass and drums at the same time. It’s easy to forget that there are only two people when you listen to their full sound. Whiteboy carries on the blues tradition with his raw, authoritative, delivery obviously born of his respect for the genre. Recorded at: JamInTheAlley Studio, Moose Jaw. Produced by: Larry Gusaas.
