Sally Penford discusses the new industry trends and topics we’ll all be talking about in 2016.
Each year brings new innovations to our industry; some of these are passing trends whilst others will be here to last. Let’s take a look at where the buzz will be in 2016.
This year, you may find you exchange your kale chips for a seaweed bowl. This not-so- sexy underwater plant is now a hot topic for its nutrient profile, skin-care benefits, and incredible potential for combatting climate change (as recently detailed in The New Yorker, which called it “a miracle food”).
Seaweeds have access to all the nutrients in the sea and are therefore an extremely rich source of minerals. Look out for Alaria Esculenta, a brown edible seaweed harvested in the British Isles that is a rich source of essential fatty acids and plant sterols to help reinforce the skins’ barrier. It also contains powerful antioxidants to fight environmental stress while stimulating collagen and Hyaluronic Acid formation.
wellness, wellness everywhere
Meditation, yoga and mindfulness have become mainstream and we are not just doing it alone. It seems that in 2016 we’ll all be sharing the benefits in a way that is social and fun.
For instance, you can now sign up to such sites as
Headspace.com and meditate with friends online. In addition, Jesse Israel’s The Big Quiet, which has organised large meditation gatherings in Central Park, is now aiming to spread to multiple cities and is just one example of how meditating is becoming the new happy hour. These meditative events are diversifying too. Alongside mediation, you could also hear a lecture from a Buddhist monk, enjoy a swanky vegan dinner after sitting in silence, learn to knit as a group while focusing your mind or get treated to a Sound Bath!

on-demand
Hungry? Top Table will book you a table at the restaurant of your choice, tout de suite! Need to get there? Just call on Uber to send a polite and efficient driver. Indeed, it appears the amount of on-demand facilities looks only set to increase in 2016.
The Spa and beauty world has already embraced the tech-enabled sharing economy with on-demand services now available. One of the fastest-growing areas of on-demand websites and apps brings salon services to your home or office turning beauty chores like blow-drying one's hair over to professionals for a reasonable fee.
Their popularity stems from the simple fact that women are just crazy busy, so offering a service in-home or office is proving more convenient than ever for time-poor clients. Today’s consumers are searching for those affordable, drop-in skin treatments; which provide high tech, high touch in just 20 minutes.
microbiomes
More conversations continue on the topic of microbiomes.
The billions of microbes that reside on human skin – probably more than 10 billion microbial cells on each of us – may be fellow travellers but they aren't free riders. Instead, the skin microbiota plays an intricate role in the human immune system, actually directing many immune functions and helping to defend its host against invading bacterial pathogens.
The underlying advantage, of course, is that the microorganisms that live on human skin have evolved to defend their dwelling place – us. For example, the skin bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis produces a secretion that reduces inflammation and speeds wound healing by binding to an immune-system receptor. Important in controlling Acne?
So, next time you find yourself reaching for the hand sanitiser or wash with an antibacterial soap for the umpteenth time that day, stop: you need your bacteria!
cleansing oils
This ‘old’ has certainly become ‘new’ again, as the much loved practice of oil-based cleansing continues to enjoy resurgence.
