you will pay a premium price for the location and often be dictated to on opening hours due to the opening hours of the shopping centre. On the other hand, if you are in a freestanding, independent high street outlet you will have more reign over your opening hours, the cost is usually lower and there is likely to be more of a loyal, community feel about the area.


Do you currently have any clients? – If you work mobile, rent a space in another business or work within a salon you will already have a client base. Now of course if you are already working within a salon, the client base technically belongs to the salon and in your contract it may stipulate that you cannot open a salon within a certain mile radius, should you ever leave, so do check the small print. I also would not condone the poaching of clients but clients have feet and freewill and if they like you that much they will find you. If you are known within an area it would make sense to position your business within a close proximity so as you already have an active client base coming to see you. You may lose a few clients along the way as your new location may not suit everyone but as long as you can accommodate most people and be well positioned to attract some new clients you will be fine.


Do you need a whole shop? – Could you rent space in a related business such as a hairdresser etc. rather than taking on a whole unit? This will keep your overheads much lower, relieve the pressure of the upkeep of the building and provide you with less responsibility. On the other hand you may find that you are more vulnerable to being evicted, so to speak, and you may alienate some clients who perhaps don’t like the salon or business that you have positioned yourself in. Either way you will still need to consider the location of the business in the same way.


Opening a salon is hard work, challenging but extremely rewarding. Don’t rush it and carefully consider your options, particularly your location because with determination you will have that salon in that location for a very long time.
