Emma Bates will now take on the role of Spa Manager, leading a team of eight whilst also being involved in the training of apprentice Spa Therapists as part of the highly accredited ‘beauty step’ program.
Emma has over 10 years’ experience in the industry, having previously worked for the Bannatyne Spa group, and has been selected for the role to take the Macdonald guest experience to new heights.
She said: “I’m delighted to join Macdonald Alveston Manor as Spa Manager. The Macdonald group itself is one of the leading independent hotel chains across the UK due to their client service, first-class Spa training and innovative way of thinking, and this is something that I’m looking forward to being a part of.”
New partnership
House Spa, based at the Cotswolds hotel Dormy House, has partnered with Natura Bissè to offer guests four new luxury facials using Natura Bissè products.
Zoe Douglas, Spa Manager of Dormy House comments: “We have wanted to provide a new Spa offering for guests, and we are certain we have found the right partner. Natura Bissè has achieved success on an international scale with its philosophy of service and outstanding standards of innovation.
“It has a loyal following among some of the world’s most beautiful and photographed women, and is the choice of many dermatologists. We are delighted to be working with them at the House Spa.”
The facials include the Diamond Life Infusion Ritual, a ‘Youth Elixr’ which focuses on rejuvenating the skin with specific massage techniques; the Diamond Energy Facial, an anti-stress treatment using products containing Damask Rose extract sources from Morocco; the NB Ceutical, using products from the collection to soften and relieve the skin whilst reinforcing it to combat hypersensitivity and inflammation; and the Oxygen Facial, which aims to purify and hydrate the skin.
Re-boot yourself A successful return
A devoted mother-of-two has returned to working in the Spa industry after a 16 year break to raise her children.
Gail Cavender took on the role of Beauty Therapist at The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket in December 2015, after spending 16 years focussing on the upbringing of her children as well as spending time in teaching assistant roles.
Gail says her return to the industry “couldn’t have been easier” after a friend of hers requested a massage. “Once I had done it, I knew I had to go back,” she says.
Having previously worked in both a salon and Spa environment, Gail says she is able to bring a different, calm perspective to the workplace, particularly being a mature therapist.
“Coming back to work certainly worked for me, it was surprisingly easy and the timing was perfect. I love my job and have had guests say that they can tell that I do. That’s very important to me.”

Yorkshire-based holistic health Spa, Alexandra House, has launched a new ‘Mindfulness’ course designed to promote a positive way of thinking.
According to NHS figures, forms of meditation are being increasingly adopted by stressed Britons, and with the sharp rise in the incidence of depression and anxiety, some GPs will consider referring patients for mindfulness-based treatments.
The sessions are run by Adele Doxey – a trained meditation, mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. The treatments are designed to reduce stress and anxiety and reprogram the body and mind to adapt a more positive approach to life.
“Mindfulness fits easily into your routine and helps you to live life to the full,” says Adele. The principles are fairly simple, but have long-lasting results and the sessions are incredibly simple, accessible, practical and straightforward. Anyone can be shown how to do it and it can be easily tailored for individual lives and challenges.”
