in conversation with service with a smile

This month, we catch up with Dr Sam Hills, Customer Services Director at Lynton Lasers, to discuss her life, loves and how she stumbled upon the beauty industry…

I ended up in the beauty industry completely by accident! I was working as a Research Scientist at Manchester University after finishing my PhD in Physics, when I heard about a role in Training and Clinical Development at Lynton Lasers. I knew it would be ideal for me, as I always found the area of medical aesthetics so fascinating, and I love meeting and training new people. And thankfully I still feel like that after 13 years at the same company!

I work with the friendliest, most dedicated teamof people you could ever have the good fortune to meet. They’re all absolutely committed to providing excellent customer service and every single one of them contributed to Lynton winning the award for ‘Best Customer Service’ at both the MyFaceMyBody Awards and the Aesthetic Awards in 2015.

I am very hands on with everything that is going on both at our headquarters and around the country. With four fantastic brands to manage we are constantly planning product launches and events as well as all that goes along behind the scenes with the trade shows.

An average day for me is different every day. Some days I’m in front of a computer all day and don’t move from my desk, other days I’m training people on our Lynton / University of Manchester training courses or out and about all over the country meeting Laser operators.

If I wasn’t in the beauty industry I would probably still be stuck in a lab somewhere or possibly teaching. I very nearly ended up as a Physics lecturer but I’m so glad I made the move into this industry, it’s infinitely more interesting!

My ideal weekendwould be just spending time with my family – ideally a nice walk on a sunny day followed by a lazy pub lunch.

I’ve always been an avid reader and have read some great books in the last few months. I loved Do No Harm by Henry Marsh which is the memoirs of a neurosurgeon and I’ve just finished Love Nina by Nina Stibbes which is a very funny, easy read.

With a full-time job and two young children, I never seem to have time to watch much TV, but I’m currently obsessed with an American sitcom called Parks and Recreation. It’s so funny, and all the characters are so warm and lovely.

My top beauty tip is a cliché, but ‘wear sunscreen’. Everyone knows it’s the only beauty product scientifically shown to delay the signs of ageing, but I’ve always struggled to find one I can wear daily that goes on well under make-up. The new Lynton Light Protect is genuinely the best formulation I’ve ever come across for a factor 50 SPF with 5-star UVA protection. Everybody loves it!

My guilty pleasure is a few glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday night. I don’t feel particularly guilty about it though!

The most famous person I have met is the popular-science TV presenter Brian Cox. He and I were friends when we did our Physics degrees together at Manchester University. I’ve got a whole host of incriminating photos I could sell to the press!

My family are from a small coastal village in Co. Waterford, Ireland. It’s a stunningly beautiful part of the world, full of friendly people and happy memories.

I suppose, like a lot of people, I’m glued to my iPhone. I do make a conscious effort not to look at it when there are people around, especially my kids, as it’s hard enough to limit their screen-time without a bad example from me!

I’m at my happiest when my children are happy.

I would like to be remembered as being a loving mum, a good friend and an honest and ethical colleague.

In 10 years’ time I see myself still at Lynton, still leading an award winning Customer Service team!
