ONE MINUTE MOORE

We’re all a bunch of racists! Apparently so, if you think newcomers

to this country should be asked about Canadian values. Kellie Leitch, a conservative leadership

candidate, has become like THE most hated person in Canada, at least among the ‘elites’ for having the audacity to suggest we screen potential immigrants for anti-Canadian values. What an evil person, right? Right up there with that Donald fellow

south of the border. Here’s the thing: Most Canadians agree

with Kellie Leitch; most Canadians feel it’s only common sense that we vet newcomers for ‘anti-Canadian’ values. Two separate polls verify this. One by Forum Research finds 67 per cent of Canadians agree with Leitch; including, not only a vast majority of Conservatives, but also Liberals and New Democrats. The other poll, by Namos Research, finds 74 per cent of Canadians support “making the screening process more onerous for potential immigrants from regions such as the Middle East to reduce potential security threats.” 74 per cent. Conservatives, Liberals,

New Democrats. They can’t all be racist, can they? Kellie Leitch, I’m not sure what her

motive is, but clearly she hit a nerve among the ‘elites.’ “What’s the big deal?” everyone else

seems to be saying. Me? I’m puzzled. ‘Cause we already screen newcomers to

this country! ------ Ottawa police chief Charles Bordereau

is asking for your help, wants your help in solving crime, is concerned about the rise in gun violence, says it’s not just a police issue, but a community issue. The chief says it’s up to all of us to step forward, that if we know something, if we see something suspicious, to give them a call. Most of us won’t though, might be scared, don’t want to get involved, or maybe you think “why bother,” they’re not going to do anything anyway.

62 BOUNDER MAGAZINE PW/16 You’d be wrong if you feel that way. I

know, from personal experience. See, several years ago we lived beside a crack house. It was a nightmare. Addicts coming and going at all hours. Sometimes they’d knock on OUR door, by mistake. I was scared, scared for my kids. What if these crackheads show up when I’m not home? And the people living in the crack house.... they had pit bulls and baseball bats. There were fights, a lot of fights, the entire neighbourhood was terrified. So, I called the cops. Told them what

was going on. They listened, wanted details. A few days passed and nothing had changed. I call back, “what’s going, it’s getting worse here!” We’re watching the place, I was told, in fact we’re watching it right NOW! I look outside, don’t see any cops, but...over there... clever...very clever. A short time later the place was raided. I could breathe again, the entire neighbourhood could breathe again. The cops, who don’t get the credit they

deserve, were amazing. So, what I’m saying is this: If you’re

worried about violence, if you’re living in a neighbourhood that is going downhill, taken over by gangs, and you’re worried about your family, your kids...trust the police chief when he says give ‘em a call. It worked for me.
