atmosphere were the large number of cyclists who had somehow peddled to the top. The bobsled ride down the mountain was just as hair-raising, with the smell of burning brakes, intermingling with the pine air, as we drove down the wrong side “but” only per our GPS. We decided to partake in the local custom of hiking so we ventured to Viens. The slippery gravel and uneven stone trails on the verge of an unbelievably steep sided, bottomless ravine was enough for me. So, I sat at (what became for me) a favorite restaurant (LE PETIT JARDIN) and drank up the local scenery. Viens is another magical, ancient, mountain top village, with unbelievable views of the valley far below (the great food and wine just added to the experience). One evening in Simiane, was one of life’s magical moments, when you look around and suddenly feel that you belong. We had shoe-horned ourselves into the bakery, with a cast of locals, for a restaurant dinner (pizza night). While amid drinking too much wine, talking too loudly (half didn’t understand French the other English), I was struck with the warm feeling that, due to their unlimited generosity, we were welcomed here and were not “just some dodgy strangers from a far-off land”.
