Price toys which results in lots of giggling and nose drips on my shirts. Then I have to get up. Once upon


a time, I could manage a sort of kip- up, a gymnastic move where, from your back, you fold in your feet, arch, and snap to a standing position. Now though, after goofing around on the floor with toddlers, I roll to my side and curl into a fetal position. One of two things happen. I either fall asleep or continue rolling onto my knees. I take a few breaths - three is usually enough - and do a single push up from one knee to stand. If the kid, still down there somewhere, says, “Grandpa, help me find my doll,” I search only on the couch. The rest of the area is hers to discover. My workouts don’t include


stupid things like burpees or any other nonsensical exercise where I must be on the floor. That would require getting up. Doing it as exercise seems redundant. So, I’m using machines and free weights in a circuit with slightly increased weight and reps. It takes me about an hour. This includes the breaks where I survey other humanoids getting ripped (as we call it) by lifting the equivalent of a subcompact car. Yours truly is fine lifting the hood. Is it working? Well, I’d love to


say this has all made me so muscular I’ve had to slide through doors sideways. But just to show you that fitness shouldn’t end when we’re young, my workouts now allow me to rise from the floor without rolling over. And - and! - while holding a grandchild. Just don’t ask me to kneel and


pick up toys. That’s what child labour is for.
