listening and on your side.” So, we had Mike the Folk
entertainer. Next came Mike the Rock and Roll star. That part came during his University of Ottawa days. He was on the football team, and every year the boys had to put on a talent show. Mike recruited some friends to try some of the rock and roll shtick he did as part of his folk shows. They called themselves “Bolt Upright and the Erections”. They were a smash, and soon they were playing local clubs and even touring. But the name got them into some hot water when they recorded their first record. “It was a pick hit in Billboard magazine. Problem was they couldn’t put the name ‘Bolt Upright’ on the label in the States so we had to change our name to ‘Savannah’. The song sank like an anchor.” Now, here’s where the story gets
weird(er)! One night Mike is back on stage doing the Folk / Entertainer show, and he is approached by a familiar face. Harvey Glatt had long been a fixture on the local music scene, and now he was involved in his grandest scheme yet… Ottawa’s first commercial FM Rock radio station. He wanted Mike O’Reilly to not only be part of it, he wanted Mike O’Reilly to be CHEZ 106’s first Morning Man! “I had no radio experience
whatsoever, and sitting in a studio in front of a microphone was a lot different than playing on stage in front of live people, but I said ‘sure, what the heck’.” While Mike had the personality and quick wit required for that job, after a time he realized he missed the instant feedback and rapport that comes with performing in front of a live audience. He was also questioning putting all his eggs into the unpredictable radio basket, so he decided to quit radio, went back to school and got his teaching degree. But radio wasn’t done with Mike
O’Reilly, and vice versa. During his Morning Show tenure, he had developed a character sketch with CHEZ Sales Manager Gary Perrin about valley lads named Delmer and

Cecil. “I was all alone in the studio every morning, and the first guy into the station would be Gary. One morning I said to Gary we’d do the next break together. I had this Cecil character and we decided to call him Delmer. It didn’t work worth a sh**, but we worked at it and it became popular. After I left CHEZ they called me back to do Delmer and Cecil because the people really liked it. It mushroomed and became really big. In fact, we still get calls
to do Delmer and Cecil”. D&C’s popularity was not
confined to radio sketches. Their first record, “Meadow Muffin Blues / Valley Express”, was a huge local hit in 1979. You check out the video, if you dare, at: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=kXExB0rAM5E. Then came a live EP in 1981, and the “punk” classic “Dance the Gidday” with the Battered Muffins. All the time Mike was one of

By MATT CAPLAN Over the years, I have attended and run countless
car shows and drooled over so many awesome vehicles. But what gives me the most enjoyment is running my classic car raffles. It is not just the fun I have driving the raffle cars
from show to show, although I must say that it is a blast. For me, the enjoyment comes from working with the youth to create the cars I give away. It is the satisfaction I get when I hand over the cheque to the charity. It is the joy I see in the eyes of the winner when I hand over the keys to his or her new ride. But this article is not about me. I am here today
to introduce this year’s raffle. This time around, I am offering up a 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 Replica, valued at over $45,000. This car was built by the students of the Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School automotive program.
a little effort and focus, they can create something to be proud of. With the car finished, we can now begin the
raffle. TThis year’s ticket proceeds will be directed to the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health to support patient care and research at The Royal. As one of Canada’s foremost mental health care and academic health science centres, The Royal’s goal is simple and clear - to get those suffering from mental illness into recovery faster and to transform the way major depression is treated. 1 in 3 in our community will suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime, and The Royal is working to change that. I know personally how they have helped people in my life. Tickets to win the Cobra are only $10 each, or

They learned that, with
