Travelling Outside the Box

Venezuela Last issue Paul and I parted ways and
I was headed to Venezuela. To get there I had to fly from Suriname to Aruba and, on the way, the pilot announced that we were flying past the island of Curacao, which was where I had to fly next, and then from there to Caracas. We are spoiled in Canada in that we speak English. It truly is an international language, where everyone seems to speak a little bit, so you can always muddle through. While waiting for my flight I was very fortunate to meet a group of people that were flying to Caracas for a tattoo convention. Our flight kept getting delayed and we ended up hoisting quite a few pops in the airport. I say fortunate because I was flying to Caracas with no local currency and, unable to speak Spanish, I couldn’t arrange my flight to Margarita Island. These good people arranged for local friends to exchange $100 US into $17,000 bolivar, the local currency, and also arranged for my flight to Margarita that left a half hour later. While on the 25-minute flight I checked my math 6 times because I couldn’t believe I just got this flight for $6.47 US. The amazing part of Venezuela is how inexpensive everything is compared to what we pay. The reason for this is their currency is constantly changing and everybody wants the US dollar. Now the money is exchanged on what is called the
