chart in terms of pure utility. To many, paper maps are tangible and timeless! They provide immediate geographic perspective, scale and context in a manner that a laptop, iPad or GPS unit cannot. In fact, a 3x4 or 6x10 inch mobile device just doesn’t cut it, especially if one is in the field and its batteries run out!
Even though this may be
true, paper maps are becoming increasingly scarce and more difficult to find and purchase! For the average Ontario
hunter and fishermen, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) produce map and chart products about the province at a number of scales. In fact, if you live in Ottawa you can visit NRCan’s National Air Photo Library to obtain high resolution aerial photography, as well.
The National Topographic
System (NTS) series of maps produced by NRCan are probably the most popular maps to ever be produced. They provide general purpose topographic coverage of Canada below the 60th
parallel at a scale
of 1:250,000 and 1:50,000. These topographic sheets are ideal for recreational activities such as cycling, canoeing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, camping and hiking. For you non-geographic types, the 1:50K maps are zoomed in versions of the 1:250K maps, where sixteen maps cover the same area as one 1:250K map. Topographic maps
accurately portray hills, valleys, lakes, rivers, streams, rapids, portages, trails and wooded areas; major and secondary side roads; and, man-made features
