Cosmo Caddy of Devon Distillery spends plenty of time creating the perfect cocktails to
pair with food, and here he shares his summer entertaining ideas.
I’m very fortunate to live in a little village here in the South West where I can enjoy our beautiful scenery in the sunshine, when it appears! I have a small garden behind my house which catches the sun late in the day and is perfect for an evening barbecue. A bit
of preparation can give you maximum results for minimum eff ort.
Focus on your white wines and rosés, paired up with
chicken and fruity marinades. Cool and refreshing drinks are obviously popular, so long, citrus-based cocktails can work well when entertaining in the summer. Don’t overlook a well-made gin and tonic either: there are so many fantastic gin options now, and it doesn’t get much more refreshing than that! Finally, plenty of ice is always good for cool, refreshing and fun drinks to start the evening with. Cheers!

Strawberries, mint and cucumber are all true summer fl avours, combining beautifully with dry gin and apple aperitif for this perfect party cocktail.
50ml dry gin 25ml apple aperitif Classic Indian tonic water Handful of strawberries Handful of fresh mint sprigs Cucumber to garnish
MAKES 1
1 A few hours before the sipping begins, dice fresh strawberries and tear your mint leaves. Add these to a healthy amount of your dry gin, (infusing your gin with these fl avours beforehand will prevent the need to pick mint from your teeth later on!)
2 Strip a cucumber down its length with a peel- er and wrap a thin belt of cucumber around the inside of the glass. Fill your glass with ice to hold the cucumber in place.
3 Now it’s time to layer up your drink. Start with your home-infused dry gin, next add the apple aperitif and top up slowly with ice cold Indian tonic water. Finish with a gentle stir to mix it all up.

❤ Nobody likes ice melt watering down their G&T on a hot summer’s day. Our tip would be to freeze some tonic ice cubes beforehand.
❤ Create your own lime ice cubes, and add to your favourite cool drink for a refreshing twist.
❤ Placing edible fl owers, mint or raspberries in your ice cubes can give a bright and playful garnish.
❤ Use a cupcake tin to make fruit-fi lled ice cubes, then add them to pitchers of water.
❤ Freeze grapes to chill white wine without watering it down.
❤ Boiling water before freezing will give you crystal clear ice cubes!
GIN AND BLUEBERRY TWIST
Blueberries and gin are the best summer combination. The black pepper perfectly complements the blueberries and the lemon gives this cocktail a zingy twist.
1 punnet blueberries (approx. 150g) 1 tbsp caster sugar Juice of half a small lemon 2 grinds of black pepper 120ml gin 30ml limoncello Ice, for shaking Soda water
MAKES 4
1 Put the blueberries, caster sugar and lemon in a cocktail shaker and mash with the end of a rolling pin.
2 Add the black pepper, gin, Limoncello and some ice and shake well.
3 Put a large ice cube into each glass along with 3 blueberries and pour the cocktail in through a sieve. Top up with soda water.
