We finally put this 21+ kilo fish on the bank on the fourth morning, it was a cause for some celebration

2010: Sometimes during sessions and matches alike, you just have to settle for the odd good picture. I’ve used similar shots of this occasion before, but not this one. Quite simply, one of the best shots I’ve ever taken, of Jacko in our Classic camp on the back of the long island in 2011. I didn’t use any sort of filter for this shot; this was how the misty sunrise actually looked. (Picture 12)

2011: To the woods! Base camp with partner Lee Jackson and runner Benji in the woods on the long island. My memories of this occasion are strong, and this shot always makes me smile. The bank was steep and muddy, and we had to cut steps to make access to and from the lake easier. We gave the job to runner Benji, who turned out to be a useless engineer. I thought I was impractical until I saw Benji’s efforts, which spurred me on to get stuck in and create the wondrous stairway, complete with ‘banister’, in the centre of the shot. (Picture 13)

2011: Lee Jackson and I both caught during the first Classic in 1998 (which was an individual event), since which time we didn’t ‘trouble the scorers,’ as they say in cricket, until the 2011 event (although Lee hadn’t fished as many Classics as I had). On the second night of the event, Lee had a run and lost it, so when we finally put this 21+ kilo fish on the bank on the fourth morning, it was a cause for some celebration. (Picture 14)
