Going Out - Page 48 Touched by Velvet!

The Velvetones ‘Touch of Velvet’ Christmas Charity Concert went down a storm last week! The ladies proudly handed over one thousand Euros split between

‘REACH OUT’ and ‘AGE CONCERN’ charities - (see photo by KRISTOFF). The audience was treated to the naughtylicious voice of Nikki ‘G’ who performed show songs and Christmas tunes in-between the Velvetones costume changes, carols and repertoire songs. Velvetones dancers ‘Grans People’ wiggled and strutted their stuff to ‘Night Fever’ with special guest performer John Travolta (AKA Maria Comber). The chorus meet each Wednesday morning at Restaurante El Paraiso, Jardin del mar, Torrevieja (behind Carrefour and McDonalds) from 9.45am until 12.30pm approx. So if there are any ladies lacking company or something to do - why not drop in - if you are not musical there are many social activities to join in with too! Many of the social members end up becoming singing members - as the magical 4 part harmonies just get under your skin! We have had many new ladies this year - so if you fancy a laugh and some new songs - check out the website www.velvetones.org or call Ena on 965 707 598 or June on 965 327 446.

Helping those who need it [

Rotary International Fellowship Denia recently donated €1100 in total between Caritas and the Red Cross in Denia to help them help those who are less fortunate than most of us. The money was raised throughout 2014 by a small surcharge on the cost of our twice a month lunch time meetings at Mapamundi and a recently held raffle which raised a further €250. For more information about the Fellowship please call 965 584 260.

Carols round the tree in Jalon

Jalon Valley HELP’s annual carol-singing evening went exceedingly well – so well that there was hardly room in the Church Square for all those who came along! The carols were led by the U3A Vall del Pop Casual Choir and the massed audience sang along. The Charity had invited pupils and teachers from twelve junior schools in the Jalon and Orba Valleys and the Vall de Laguart, and about a hundred children came. They brought toys for children in need, and presents for the elderly, and sang Jingle Bells – several times – to a delighted crowd. Elaine Horton, the President of the Charity, presented each school with a card and a donation of 500€. Cliff Edmonds, one of the JVH volunteers, disguised as Papa Noel, found himself mobbed by the children on several occasions, but seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it. Elaine Horton also presented a donation of 3500€ to Jacqui Phillips, the President of MABS Cancer Support, to help them with the enormous bills they incur in caring for cancer sufferers and their families. After distribution of the refreshments, the President thanked all the volunteers who had helped in any way, and told them how proud she was of the way JVH volunteers always stepped up to the mark - and she told anyone in the crowd who would like to join that they would be very welcome. She also praised the generosity of the local community, and thanked the Alcalde and Ayuntamiento for their continued co-operation, not only at Christmas, but all through the year. Jalon Valley Help wishes everyone a happy New Year, and invites them to come to the Party at the Panto on 15th January 2015, when the Careline Theatre will again be donating all proceeds of the first evening of the Pantomime (Alice) to charity. Ring 659 624 643 for tickets. See the website – www.jalonvalley help.com for more information.

Every year U3A Oliva Walkers and Amblers groups share an alternative Christmas day, visiting the picturesque Castillo de Aielo de Rugat near Gandia. After a bracing climb to five hundred metres, we spread a festive tablecloth in the castle ruins, and enjoy a Christmas feast, including a few bottles of cava to help the descent. The sunshine and the 360 degree views complete the occasion.
