Exercise for a Healthier Longer Life, by Dr. Alfonso Valle.

Without doubt, exercise is the best method to prevent health problems. Training your heart reduces the risk of heart disease and all kinds of other cardiovascular disease.

Moderate practicing of sport combined with the modifi cation of other health habits, promotes a

benefi cial effect in preventing coronary disease, reducing mortality and improving overall quality of life.

To explain in more detail, exercising will lower the level of total cholesterol and raises HDL (good cholesterol).

It can benefi t patients with diabetes by increasing the sensitivity of cells to insulin, and allow better control of blood sugar levels. Exercise also improves the “organisational capacity” of the heart, reducing the need for oxygen thereby reducing blood pressure, so the need for antihypertensive drugs is lower.

Participating in sport allows better control of caloric intake, which will result in weight-loss leading to a signifi cant improvement in quality of life. This in turn quite often infl uences the abandonment of negative habits such as smoking, high alcohol intake or persistent bad eating habits.

To achieve this it is recommended that a person performs aerobic exercise three to fi ve times a week at no less than 30 minutes sessions, controlling the heart rate so that it remains within moderate levels of intensity. The best activities are walking fast, running, cycling and swimming.

It is fundamental that prior to the start of new fi tness regime, especially in middle aged people, to undergo a cardiology study that can determine cardiovascular risk factors. This examination is also recommended for healthy individuals with intense and regular physical activity. At REMA we can perform this specialised exam and invite you to visit us for a free consultation to explain the process.
