Is hearing better one of your New Year’s resolutions?
What do stress, fatigue, depression, poor self-esteem, social isolation, lower wages, Alzheimer’s, and dementia all have in common? They are all potential by-products of hearing loss.
If you can hear, but not understand, have difficulty understanding speech when in the presence of background noise, and feel as if everyone mumbles, including the stars on TV, you may be one of the approximately 4 million people in Spain who experience significant hearing impairment. Research shows that a person who realises they have hearing loss typically waits around seven years to do something about it. Yet, after these people have been properly treated, almost every one of them makes a comment similar to, “Boy, I really wish I hadn’t waited so long…I didn’t realise how much I was missing!” So, why do people wait? No, it’s not money. Money is not among the top ten reasons why people wait. They wait because they are concerned about how others will perceive them. And they wait because of their misconception that diminished hearing is just a part of the aging process - something not worth doing anything about. Interestingly hearing loss is less associated with age than many people think: 55% of individuals with hearing impairment are below the age of 65. For everyone it is very worthwhile to do something about it because the preponderance of recent studies continues to prove how hearing connects us to our whole body and health. For those of you who are concerned about your own or a loved one’s hearing, the best thing to do is to have it evaluated as soon as possible.
