Page 40 Hedges.

Hedges are a very important part of the garden both aesthetically and practically. On the whole the majority of hedges I see are used to create privacy from neighbours and passers by e.g. around pool areas and also as a general boundary barrier.

These are all perfect uses for hedges, but they are often positioned in such a way that they end up totally segregating the garden spaces which sometimes provides the desired purpose but not the desired appearance. Hedges can be short, tall, fat, thin, or if the right plant is chosen cut into any shape desired. Hedges are a fantastic environmentally friendly idea for your garden providing nesting places and habitats for wildlife and it is a wonderful renewable source to act as a wall. Hedges can be used to divide space within the garden and offer a natural and softer option to a block wall, but be aware that the faster growing varieties can require a lot of maintenance and can soon become a nuisance to neighbours who suddenly lose their light. A faster growing variety like mitosporum do demand more work and can suffer from rot. If they are not maintained properly they can deteriorate and need drastic action before they can begin to repair and grow. Always water your hedge during any dry spells, after drastic repair work, for the first year, and feed well with compost. Positioned and chosen correctly they can be used to create different microclimates within a garden space creating areas of still calm where the winter sun can be enjoyed without the cooling breeze, why not create a secret garden to relax with a book? Hedges do not have to be tall but can be small and formal simply creating pathways to move pedestrian traffic through or around a garden. Hedges can be an extremely versatile addition to a garden, as I said above they are usually functional but there is no need for them to plainly be a green wall. They can give so much to a garden providing colour and scent, formality or informality. How to decide which hedge you need? Think about height, colour, shape, and scent. How much maintenance do you want to do? Do you simply want to trim or would you like to spend time clipping a hedge into an award winning shape? Look around you to see which hedges seem to be growing best in your area, as that may well indicate your soil type and what will work well for you. Some of the main cultivation points with hedges: If possible plant young to establish solid root systems in good free draining soil, as suits most Mediterranean plants. Once the hedge is just below desired width or height you must trim them, and keep trimming them, as and when required, as the more training you do earlier on, the easier the hedge will be to look after in the long term and it should develop a much fuller healthier appearance. But as mentioned above, maintenance depends on the hedge you have chosen. What I am trying to say is hedges do not only have to be an uninteresting wall of foliage or a dark overpowering shady space. They can be a really delightful and interesting addition to your garden. Good hedging plants. Evergreen and provides height. Cuppressus sempivirens not (stricta or totem) the good old hedge of choice. Evergreen and mid range height. Pittosporum, Mytosporum, Nerrium Oleander, Buxus. Scented. Laurus Nobilis. Colour. Lantana, Hibiscus. Silvery foliage. Olive, Teucrium. Mytosporum, Lantana and Hibiscus do not like the cold so avoid open or cold areas. Above wall hedges. Another pretty easy cheat we have devised over last couple of years when a customer wants a hedge type structure, but wants a more instant height is to create a frame using standard fence fixings and then grow climbers, especially as we can buy these for a better price than large conifers and they normally root in a lot quicker, which gives a lovely interesting wall of green, with flowers and also scent if desired. Also not quite a hedge, but if you want to cover large walls with more interesting textures then wall gardens can be created.
