Heros and villains are perceived according to which side of the fence you position yourself. Terrorist or freedom fi ghter? Rebel or loyalist? Friend or foe? Our initial attitudes are formed by family values, personal experience and nationality, the latter probably having the greatest infl uence of all on mentally sorting out the good from the bad boys. So I had mixed feelings when asked to review a book that centres on a Russian Spetsnaz offi cer as a Bond-like-hit-man hero. But after reading the fi rst chapter, I have to admit, the story had me hooked, gasping for a glass of chilled vodka and a balalaika.
Set in the 1980s, George Thomas’ new novel, The Deadly Diplomat, features handsome but rugged Colonel Alexei Guliyev racing around the Middle East, bumping off numerous targets that range from CIA agents to local dignitaries and law enforcement offi cers while
posing as a Soviet Cultural Attaché. On the surface, a nasty piece of work, but the author justifi es the assassinations when he reveals that beneath the ‘good-guy’ surface, all the victims were guilty of brutal crimes including rape, torture and murder. Alexei’s undercover and amorous adventures cover the era during which political intrigue was probably at its greatest with the main powers fi ghting to obtain military bases within Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Ethiopia territories through any means possible. Dirty double-dealing, which according to the author, were inspired by actual events.
Apart from working for 12 years in the Middle East during the 1970s and 80s, author George Thomas has left no stones unturned in his research, resulting in a well informed, good exciting read with a surprise ending.
