Teulada Moraira Lions Club has, for a number of years now, organised annual hand-writing competitions for the primary school pupils attending the Colegíos Públicos Cap D´Or, Moraira and Santa María Magdalena, Benitachell and, this year, TM Lions were delighted to be able to extend the competition to C.E.I.P. La Penya Blanca, the primary school at Benigembla. On 12th December, therefore, a number of TM Lions made their way to Benigembla for the first of the 2014 prize-giving ceremonies where, as part of their welcome, the pupils treated them to a rendition of Christmas Carols. Every year, TM Lions express themselves surprised and delighted at the quality of the entries submitted to them – and these are not merely empty phrases. The standard of penmanship on display ranges from the “merely” excellent to the downright jaw-dropping, particularly bearing in mind the age-ranges of the participants and the entries from Benigembla proved to be right up to the mark. While the whole school looked on, David Platt, the Lions Vice-President, announced the winners of the Benigembla Competition and awarded the certificates and prizes which, in the junior category, went to Anna (who is just three years old!); whilst the two older age groups were won by Carlos and Joan respectively. Congratulations to all three!

Valley Voices Choir
29th November. The event was the Emaús Christmas Fair where they sang a variety of popular and festive songs to an enthusiastic audience. On Thursday 18th December, the choir sang in the church in Jalon, Eglesia de Santa Maria, together with the Costa Barber Singers and John Anthony, guitarist.
It was a festive and light hearted occasion enjoyed by both choir and audience, and was followed by mince pies and mulled wine in the square outside the church. The proceeds of this enjoyable evening are to be donated to Caritas. The next rehearsal is on 12th January when they will start learning new songs for their summer concerts. It is an excellent time to join the choir so if you are interested please contact Joan on
joanstokking@yahoo.co.uk or Jennie on
jenniemay38@hotmail.com Alternatively, come along to a rehearsal at Casa Julia in Parcent at 9.45am on Monday morning where you will be made very welcome.

The title of the concert was “A Chr istmas Cracker ” and the performance, played to a packed theatre, certainly warranted that title. The variety of songs from rock to classics was amazing. The choir excelled in some of the difficult John Rutter arrangements and displayed depth of feeling in the musical telling of the Christmas story. Humour came from Penny, Amanda, Quinta and Jenny and pure joy from Linda’s solos. Mary Anderton, director, congratulated the choir and thanked Gordon, the accompanist, and assured everyone, especially the gentlemen, that their hard work had indeed resulted in something very special. All ticket money was donated to the Maite Boronat Centre Charity in Calpe.
The children of the Bastidor after school club
enjoyed their annual Christmas party, which has become a tradition with Oliva U3A. Forty children from six to ten years old enjoyed Zumba, Musical Chairs, Pass the Parcel and a splendid tea. The highlight of the evening was Santa’s visit, when each child received a present, generously provided by the members of U3A Oliva. The many helpers enjoyed the party as much as the children, and we look forward to doing it again next year.
