Beaujolais Beautiful Beaujolais Considered part of greater Burgundy, the rolling hills of Beaujolais

are traversed during stage 12 before concluding in St Etienne. The Gamay grape reigns supreme in Beaujolais and the area divides broadly into two with granite dominant in the Northern half and clay in the Southern half. Generally speaking, the wines from the Granite based north are reckoned to be the best and this is where most of the 10 Cru Villages are based. Best known is probably Fleurie, which has elegance, silkiness and fruitiness. Other Crus wines, Morgon for example, is richer and fuller bodied, needing time to reveal its character.

Most wines from the southern half are easy drinking, fresh styles

for immediate consumption and classed as straightforward Beaujolais. I know of one exception and these are the wines made by Jean-Paul Brun who produces richer, very expressive styles from his vineyards near Charnay, a village just 20 miles north of Lyon, France’s second city.

Away to the Alps

Not too many wines of note grown in the stages that involve the high climbs into the Alps so we’ll move on without hesitation to the warmer climes down South.
