Padstow May Day 1st May May Day is the biggest day in Padstow’s calendar when many Padstonians return to their roots. The origins of May Day or Obby Oss are not clear, but the most popular is that this festival started in pagan times with many possible reasons.
Locals spend the night prior decorating the small town with flags, flowers and greenery as well as erecting the maypole. The morning of May Day two ‘osses’ emerge, one blue one red, swirling and dancing through the streets to be taunted by a teaser who leads the dance with theatrical movements. The retinue are all dressed in white with colourful ribbons and flowers decorating their costumes, whilst they dance through the town streets followed by two followers, one old and one young, singing the May song.

Surfing Championships 3rd – 5th May This year’s 41st annual English National Surfing Championship will see the young up and coming surfers battle to knock established names from the top spot throughout three divisions. One of the longest running championships it ensure that there is a strong English representation at the European Surfing Championships.

Art8 Newquay Arts Festival 23rd – 26th May Newquay’s first festival of art and culture is set to be a feast for the senses. There will be eight days of art covering eight disciplines including fine art, dance, design, photography, literature, drama, music and craft.

and Music 10th – 17th May This is an eclectic festival of music, performance and literature includes a programme of talks, guided walks, exhibitions, workshops and river cruises not to mention community activities based in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
