The Tolkien Trail – Lancashire lkien Trail


1. With your back to main road head along Warren Fold, going over a stile follow the wall on your left. Pass through a gate and turn right walking across a field and passing a lone tree to reach the far fence.


2. Don’t go through the gate instead follow the fence to your right towards the red bricked cricket pavilion. Head through the kissing gate and follow the field boundary before passing through a second kissing gate and following the path downstream before climbing uphill with Fox Fall Wood on the left.


3. Head right across a narrow paddock towards the corner of the iron fence. Pass through the gate and turn right past the observatory following the track towards Hall Barn Farm.


4. Turn left before the gated entrance to the farm and pass through a wooden gate following the line of farm buildings and you will see a breath-taking view of Stonyhurst on your left. Walk straight ahead on the track following the hedge and on your right across the fields you will be able to see the profile of Pendle hill and Clitheroe castle.


5. Once you reach Woodfields cross the road and turn down the lane between the houses. This will become a rough track heading left. Turn right over the stile and follow the field alongside Over Hacking Wood until you reach a second stile turning right onto a stepped path.


turn right along the footway. Opposite the junction pass over the stile and cross the field and a second stile. Walking straight uphill you will need to cross another stile before reaching the brow. Head right across the field and through a kissing gate heading towards the hedge left of the farm buildings.


Ribble Valley


8. Head through the kissing gate and left along the track heading downhill until you reach Winckley Hall Farm yard. Go through the yard and left, passing a brick wall, to reach the gate. Head through the stile and take an immediate right onto a gravel track with the river on your left.


9. Where River Hodder meets River Ribble take the path to the left to reach a stile. Pass through this turning left and walk the path of the River Ribble.


10. Continue following the path until you come across a stone building on your right. Head through a gate and over a stile heading towards Jumbles Farm. Following the track to the left following the river. Where the track veers right keep heading straight along the river until you see a stone cross on the hillside to your right.


Cromwells Bridge


6. Crossing the bridge over the stream follow the right fork of the path towards River Hodder. Just before the river turn right over a second bridge and head uphill. Hodder Place will be on your right as you descend towards the river and pass through a stile emerging onto a wide track.


7. Following the river as it curves right at Lower Hodder Bridge cross the road and


11. When the cross disappears from view head over the stile and across the gravel before going through another stile to continue alongside the river. When you reach the aqueduct go over the sile and head right across the field and through another stile on the edge of the wood. Cross the wooden bridge and climb the stepped path. Heading over the stile and continue ahead following the fence on the left.


12. Where the fence turns sharply left keep heading straight downhill. Cross two bridges and a stile before heading slightly left uphill. After about 200m cross the stream on the right and continue left uphill. At the top of the field go over the stone stile and you will find yourself in the car park of the Shireburn Arms Hotel.
