What’s on... March
April Abracadabra -
Children’s Magic Show 22nd March 100 years ago Blackburn’s very own circle of magicians magically appeared and called themselves ‘The Modern Mystic League’. They were modern then and they are still modern today on their 100th birthday.
Various events to mark the occasion are taking place in and around the town, one of which is this celebration of ‘children’s magic’ by some of the most talented and popular children’s entertainers in the north.

The Hallé Assistant Conductor, Jamie Phillips, makes his Blackburn debut with Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ Symphony. From dark beginnings, full of foreboding, it proceeds via an uneasy waltz and a far-from-triumphal march to a closure of near-unbearable poignancy. An experience not to be missed. Before this, pianist John Lill – an old friend of the Hallé – returns for that composer’s impressive C-minor Concerto. The concert opens with Berlioz’s irrepressible Le Carnaval romain, one of the most brilliant concert overtures ever written.
