enowned for its outstanding natural beauty, rich heritage and cultural experiences its little wonder that Yorkshire captivated the travel experts. Here are a few more facts about this beautifully rugged area of England.


A 2013 poll revealed the North Yorkshire town of Harrogate to be the happiest place in Britain.


Yorkshire has more Michelin star restaurants than any other county outside of London.


The walls of Richmond Castle are the oldest castle walls in Britain outside London. They were begun in 1071, just after William the Conqueror had devastated the region during his ‘Harrying of the North’ punishing an uprising there, and were intended to prevent further rebellions.


Holy Trinity Church in Hull, East Yorkshire, is the largest parish church in England. The church dates back to about 1300 and contains what is widely acknowledged to be some of the finest medieval brick-work in the country.


Yorkshire can boast it has the biggest chippy in the world. Harry Ramsden’s in Guisley, Leeds seats over 250 people and does a lovely take-a-way too.


Harrogate’s Turkish Bath and Health Spa is one of only seven remaining 19th Century Turkish baths in the UK and the Titanic Spa in South Yorkshire was the very first eco-spa in the country and has featured in The Independent’s Top 50 Spas of the World.


Yorkshire provides a choice of over 4,800 hotels, guesthouses, self-catering units and campsites with enough bed space to accommodate the entire population of France over the course of a single year.


Yorkshire has the largest concentration of food and drink businesses in the UK.


Bradford trumped Los Angeles, Cannes and Venice to achieve UNESCO City of Film status.


Yorkshire has nearly a third of the total area of National Parks in England (the North York Moors, most of the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District) covering a fifth of the region’s land area.


The Yorkshire Dales is home to England’s largest single drop waterfall, Hardraw Force, a reputed 100 foot drop, as well as Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, at 1,732ft above sea level.


Yorkshire is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Studley Royal in North Yorkshire, one of the first to be designated in the UK, and more recently Saltaire Village in West Yorkshire (World Heritage).


York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, taking 252 years to build and containing 128 stained glass windows.


The Yorkshire Dales are comprised of many dales of different sizes but the largest 16 are - Arkengarthdale, Birkdale, Bishopdale, Chapel-le-Dale, Coverdale Dentdale, Garsdale, Langstrothdale, Littondale, Kingdale, Malhamdale, Nidderdale, Ribblesdale, Swaledale, Wensleydale, Wharfdale.


With all of this history, scrumptious food, breath-taking scenery and exceptional architecture it’s only a matter of time before this diamond in the rough gets the traveller attention it merits.
