INDUSTRY UNWRAPPED HYBRID MOULDING PRESSES ACHIEVE HIGH PRODUCTIVITY

Demand for thin wall mouldings is down to its obvious advantages: A lower moulding weight means reductions in material and shipping costs, and faster cycle times can deliver significant productivity gains. Sumitomo Demag’s El-Exis range of hybrid moulding presses was designed for high- speed production. It incorporates a number of innovative mechanical and software features and typically achieves 3-5% more productivity than other machines on the market. When fast production speeds and frequent changes are required, machine versatility is vital. It’s here that advanced system controls combine with superlative build quality to minimise maintenance requirements and changeover times.

Designed to withstand higher stresses and speeds in a 24/7 production environment, the company’s El-Exis machines have become the equipment of choice for many thin wall moulding specialists. The choice of machine is obviously important, and it’s here that Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s expertise in hybrid – electric/hydraulic – machine technology is paying dividends for existing users and new customers alike.

Holfeld Plastics has picked up a sustainable packaging design award at the Repak 2013/14 Awards. This new category recognises success in introducing sustainable packaging designs to the Irish market. It is broad in scope, including packaging integrity, eco-friendly sourcing of packaging materials, increased usage of recyclates and success in changing to simple, more recyclable materials. Holfeld’s qualification for the award was based in part on its Diamat technology, which provides processes to ‘superclean’ recycled Polymer pellets. Holfeld design and produce meat trays and fresh-produce punnets comprising up to 90% recycled material. They are said to be lighter than equivalent trays in the market and are designed to minimise transport and handling requirements. This technology is being applied across a range of materials and designs and Holfeld works with its customers to ensure they understand both the environmental and technical benefits of these products.

VISION DETECTOR RIVALS 2D CAMERA

SICK has developed a new vision sensor with dimension verification, position detection and intelligent measurement capability that challenges 2D smart camera performance. The Inspector PIM60 will support a wide range of high-speed quality inspection, picking and assembly applications while still offering the ease-of-use and attractive price of a vision sensor. SICK expects the Inspector PIM60’s comprehensive capability for high-speed inspection to be of great interest to machine builders and systems

integrators, as well as customers in consumer goods manufacture and packaging operations. “With the Inspector PIM60, Sick has narrowed the gap in functionality between a smart camera and a vision sensor, but not the price,” says David Hannaby, SICK (UK) Product Manager, Imaging and Measurement. “The existing Inspector tools do a great job for presence/absence or feature inspection. Now with the new measurement tools we can also support automatic rejection of out of specification products and provide feedback to improve the efficiency of a process.” The SICK Inspector PIM60 provides integral quality inspection and can measure diameters, angles and variable distances. Its new, versatile measuring tools make it possible to verify dimensions and assess product acceptability, with pass or fail verification.
