INDUSTRY UNWRAPPED ULTRA FLEXIBLE SLEEVE WRAPPING FOR GARDEN EQUIPMENT

Shrink wrapping equipment supplier Yorkshire Packaging Systems (currently celebrating its 35th year of trading) has recently installed a sleeve wrapping system to the Nottinghamshire based firm Garden Buildings Direct, www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk. Garden Buildings Direct is the market leading UK supplier and manufacturer of component parts for garden sheds and various items of garden furniture. The company used to put its packs through a side-sealing machine and then simply bag the products. This was problematic however, as the bags were not wrapped tightly enough to the packs without the machine being set to specific sizes for each product, which was cumbersome. The equipment supplied by YPS allowed much more flexibility in the packaging operation. The machinery accepts a variety of different-sized products, which are automatically detected and the new shrinking process ensures a tightly-wrapped and secure pack every time. The equipment was also unique because it was supplied with 12 metres of powered -ntegrated conveyors manufactured by YPS. Additionally it was supplied with a YPS- designed and -manufactured side-shift accumulation system for the outfeed of the line.

National Flexible has been appointed to provide the latest packaging for a new range of pre-packed croutons launched for sale in major supermarkets. Manufactured under licence by Chaucer Foods UK Ltd, a soup crouton manufacturer, the packs needed to have instant shelf-appeal. As such, the printing of the film was a key factor in reproducing the artwork of the iconic logo to make it instantly recognisable as an extension of the Heinz brand. National Flexible produced a bespoke-metallised laminate which was printed on the very latest state-of-the-art high-speed gravure press using a series of laser-engraved cylinders to ensure that the artwork was reproduced to the highest quality. “Specialist bespoke laminates can often mean a lengthy lead time as the materials are made to order. We offer all of our customers the opportunity to benefit from reducing those lead times to a matter of days by making use of our free stock-holding facility,” said National Flexible’s Sales Manager Lee Rollinson. “Finished reels can be delivered in as little as 24 hours - or as required. This level of service is ideal for customers who are dealing with supermarkets and need to be able to respond quickly to any unexpected demand or promotions,” he continued.

Glass manufacturer Beatson Clark secured up to £1.7 million from the Regional Growth Fund in July and hopes to use the funds to install a larger and more efficient bottle-forming machine and a bulk palletiser at its South Yorkshire plant. This is just part of a planned £12 million investment which will include a larger capacity furnace. “This funding is fantastic news for Beatson Clark as it will enable us to strengthen

the service we provide to the pharmaceutical sector,” said Lynn Sidebottom, Sales and Marketing Director at Beatson Clark. “It will facilitate an expansion of our activities in the growing brewery sector and help to secure jobs for the future.” A total of £50m was allocated to Yorkshire businesses from the fourth round of the Regional Growth Fund (RGF). The grant will be part of an ongoing investment programme. Over the past 18 months Beatson Clark has invested £10 million in furnace improvements and new high-tech equipment at its plant in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, including new vision-based inspection equipment and the latest CAD 3D visualisation software. “We’re a long-established business but we never stand still,” said

Lynn Sidebottom. “We’re always thinking about how we can improve our products and processes and constantly looking for new ways to provide an even better and more flexible service to our customers.”

DEAL SEALED WITH FURNITURE MAKER

Yorkshire Packaging Systems has recently installed a wide sleeve sealer and tunnel into the Dundee factory of JTC Furniture Group. JTC is a leading manufacturer of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom fitted furniture for the healthcare, education and accommodation industries and the public alike. When it won a new contract, the volumes required dictated an automated packaging solution be sought. Therefore the equipment supplied by YPS was a 1600mm-wide inline sleeve sealer and double-chamber shrink tunnel. The machinery was unique in that the top roll of film was floor mounted to provide easier roll changes for the operators whilst also satisfying health and safety concerns about the heavy weight of each roll. Secondly, the shrink tunnel was an extended model in order to accommodate the large sizes of JTC’s products, some up to 3 metres in length, at a faster throughput. Finally, smoothing rollers were added to ensure a totally enclosed pack. The benefit of shrink wrapping to JTC has been the ability to take on additional contracts without increasing its packaging and labour costs. Donald Chalmers, JTC Senior Buyer said ‘The whole process has been very stress-free. The machinery was delivered on time, the installation went smoothly and the equipment has since proven to be extremely reliable.’
