Design app supports can experimentation
AN app for designing drinks cans has been unveiled by the Can Makers, a trade body represent- ing manufacturers of these containers in the UK. Intended to make it easy for designers to visualise and share creations in 3D, the CanCreator app is now available for free online and to download for Mac and PC at
www.cancreator.com. The app allows can designs to be viewed in 3D, supporting experimentation with a variety of sizes and fi nishes. Feedback from young designers Hayley Barrett, Isaac Sodipo and Rachel Gidlow, from leading design agencies, Design Bridge and JKR Global, appear to give a sense of the app’s potential. Hayley Barrett, a senior de- signer at Design Bridge com- mented: “This is a great little app which is easy to use and quick to understand. At the end of the day packaging is never 2D, so this app is a great tool to see realistic results fast.”

Templates for popular can sizes are available to download for use in Adobe Photoshop and Illustra- tor, so designers can focus on their creations. Once complete, it’s easy to upload designs for a 3D view from any angle. There are also innovative printing tech- niques, such as heat sensitive thermochromic inks and tactile fi nishes, available at the touch of a button.
Can-do attitude lends
optimism to fl at results Despite the coldest spring since 1962 and continued economic challenges, can deliveries for beer and cider have almost equalled those of the fi rst half of 2012, says trade body the Can Makers. Empty beer and cider drinks can deliveries to June 2013 reached 2,157 million.
Nielsen report that of the different beer and cider can offer-
ings, it’s the smaller sizes e.g. 33cl, which are performing well with an increase of 12%.
In the carbonated soft drink (CSD) market, empty can deliver- ies reached 2,411 million (-5.1%) for the fi rst half of 2013, with energy drinks continuing to shine. Nielsen fi gures show another consecutive year of growth for 50cl cans, driven by energy drinks, which grew by 18%. Overall, total can deliveries reached 4,568 million across the UK, a decline of less than 3%. While the fi rst half of this year was affected by the late spring and cold weather, recent hot weather has undoubtedly boosted drinks sales with a host of al-fresco events such as garden par- ties, picnics and barbeques. Geoff Courtney of the Can Makers commented: “While the beer and cider market performance is encouraging, fi rst half numbers reveal the signifi cant impact that weather has had on the can market. As the UK has enjoyed some much-needed summer sun, the early signs for the drinks market are positive. We hope that the hot weather and retail promotions continue, encouraging more outdoor occasions where drinks in cans are consumed.”

NEW ‘Super Grip’ slat-spiral elevator/lowerator from CSL
Conveyor Systems Ltd (CSL) launched its new ‘Super Grip’ slat-spiral elevator/lowerator, the latest space saving, compact column spiral conveyor that can provide a smooth, continuous high throughput and flow of product vertically to/from different floor levels.
CSL’s spiral conveyors small ‘footprint’ saves valuable floor space and provide an ideal solution where the use of inclined belts conveyors and elevators are restricted by available space. The

unique SuperGrip belt enables the transport of most products up steep inclines without slippage due to the inclusion of friction pads that cover more than 60% of the belt top, exceeding 10 times the area covered by ordinary spiral belts. Available in mild steel, with intermediate corrosion resistant finish or in the ultimate, hygienic stainless steel, the spirals are versatile, simple to operate and maintain. They can transport most things from small cartons, boxes, drink crates, shrink wrapped trays through to drums and sacks. Their compact construction also makes them ideal for applications where off-line buffering between packaging and palletising is required, or a time delay is necessary to integrate with other end of line equipment or to balance production throughput. CSL can advise on the technical suitability for product handling and supply full specification literature as required.
