DRINKS Flip-top with new tether
APTAR will introduce its Avantage flip-top sports closure to the market in 2014,
a monomaterial
sports cap with a 170° spring loaded hinge at- taching the lid to the body.
One of its stand-out fea-
tures is an original tether design, says Aptar. Avantage is the com- pany’s first closure featuring its Stay-With™ tether. Suitable for all neck sizes this proprietary tether permanently affixes the closure to the bottle and can be twisted and pulled away from the drinking orifice. It prevents misplacement of the cap and provides consum- ers assured resealing ability; a perfect solution for consumers to add a flavor enhancer to their beverage with on-the-go ease. Tethering solutions are the next step in the evolutionary process of PET closures, ensuring more recycling and less waste. By pre- venting the separation of closures from the bottle Aptar is offering an affordable solution to meet new legislation currently be-
ing discussed in the EU and the UK. These ‘packaging producer responsibility’ initiatives
could
require closures to be affixed to their bottles to ensure they reach recycling facilities.
With advances in technology and increased demand for recy- cled plastics, bottle cap recycling is on the rise. Recycling process- ing equipment has improved over the years allowing bottles and their caps to be recycled togeth- er. The plastic materials can be divided into their separate waste streams making the recycling pro- cess run more smoothly at sort- ing facilities.
There were an estimated 17.7 billion plastic dispensing closures produced in 2012, equivalent to thousands of tons of raw mate- rial.
