FROM THE EDITOR

AS scourges of western civilisation go, plastics waste does seem to be succumbing to our efforts to curb it. Recycling has been something of a success story in the UK in recent years, according to independent recycling authority Recoup, at its recent conference (see page 4). But consumers are still confused by it, the rationale behind the group’s latest initiative to encourage more of the public to recycle. It’s certainly an issue that confuses me. So I was no less befuddled

by the appearance of a new waste management movement at the recent Scottish Resources Conference, recommending a move away from recycling towards a philosophy of repair and reuse. Professor Walter Stahel of the Swiss-based Product Life Institute explained that recycling is unprofitable for all but a tiny number of materials, such as copper and aluminium, so it will always be reliant on public subsidies. We’re better off focusing on how products can be reused or modified. Compostable packaging still seems to offer a lot of promise as a

sustainabilty strategy so I was encouraged by the appearance of a local success story. Glasgow firm Robert Cullen Ltd has produced what the UK REA says is “arguably the UK’s greenest packaging product” (see page 6) with its compostable fruit and veg trays made of recycled materials. One of the pitfalls often associated with the use of recycled materials is the presence of residual and toxic chemicals, a particular concern with food packaging, a topic we address in the Food section of this issue (see page 20).
