Can producer reveals new vessel designs and materials

Innovators recognised in Munich

The Combidome - a bottle made from cardboard - picked up the award for best carton

THE fi nalists and winners of the Beverage Innovation Awards at Drinktec – sponsored by Rexam Beverage Can – were announced at a special awards ceremony at the show in September.

REXAM Beverage Can appeared at the Drinktec show in Septem- ber, providing the fi rst public unveiling of innovations such as photochromic ink and “thermo- chromic printed ends”.

The company was also demon-

strating its ‘fi rst to market’ Edi- tions Technology (patent pend- ing),

which allows Rexam to

produce up to 24 designs of the same label simultaneously on a single pallet.

Visitors to the stand were given an update on the development of the FUSION Contour aluminium bottle, which employs Rexam’s Drawn Wall Ironed (DWI) technol-

ogy. It is shaped with a contour while retaining its key functional elements and graphic potential, according to the company. Rexam also used the event to highlight its commitment to be- coming a more sustainable busi- ness. “Following the 2012 launch of our Sustainability Report, we have set our European business four defi ned and challenging sus- tainability targets for 2013 and one of the key discussion points for our team and our customers at Drinktec will be around how we can work andsupport them in their own sustainability goals,” said Rexam’s Iain Percival.

In this category H2M beat off competition from O-I and Amorim’s Helix Concept cork-glass wine packaging solution. The best bottle in PET award went to Sidel Group for its water bottle design for Société des Eaux d’Aix les Bains. Krones was highly com- mended in this category for it’s never ending commitment to light weighting. For fl exible drinks packaging, the best carton or pouch award was picked up by SIG Combibloc (Germany) with the Combi- bloc Combidome (pictured, above). PPS PRODUCES INTRICATE GIFT PACKAGING FOR BOLLINGER

Professional Packaging Services has produced the Pentagon Special Cuvée Gift Box for premium Champagne house, Bollinger.

Produced in time for the Christmas market, the gift box showcases the Special Cuvée in an original way to provide it with eye-catching shelf appeal at the time of year when brands are vying for attention.

The fi ve sided gift box has an ingenious opening mechanism. Instead of using magnets, the famous Bollinger lettering has been removed on the right hand side, creating a stencil effect, while the letters on the left hand side have been embossed. When the two come together, the embossed lettering fi ts perfectly into the stencil effect, providing an unusual closure.

When closed the box displays Bollinger’s brand colours with four sides of the box printed red, with a narrow strip displaying the famous gold name, standing proud through the embossed lettering, against a white background. When opened, the interior is printed gold to enhance the luxurious feel and exclusivity of the gift.

The box is also made entirely of recyclable cardboard. Professional Packaging Services Ltd
