Studying Abroad


a support base of friends and business connec- tions makes a country infinitely more appealing in my opinion. Moreover, it exposes opportuni- ties abroad that students would not have even known existed.


My trip ended in Rio de Janeiro, closing with a much more tourist-like ambiance. While it is dif- ficult to not enjoy oneself in one of the most vi- brant cities in the world, I did not have nearly the same experience as I did in Vila Vehla. One of the largest perks of studying abroad rather than inde- pendent travel is the ability of school programs to make connections like we had with the students at UVV. There are plenty of programs that fail to maximize on this perk.

It was not until my first year of law school that I began to understand what international law re- ally entailed. I have found that the biggest mis- conception among law students interested in international law is that they will find a career do- ing only international law. On the contrary, I have found that international law is used in the context of other substantive legal issues. In my case, I entered law school with a strong interest in in- ternational environmental issues. Fortunately for me, my study abroad experience in Brazil provid- ed me with a variety of opportunities to expand on this particular area of law. Likewise, there are plenty of study abroad experiences that would have had very little relevance to my academic in-
