The Society has contributed to new guidelines that outline the key principles NHS organisations should follow to prevent and manage sickness absence.
The guidance document has been produced by the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Partnership Group (HSWPG) and although written for managers, is a useful reference document for reps. It aims to: • Provide best practice guidance for policy development; • Support best management practice in
supporting staff to improve attendance and handling complex attendance management situations; • Guide organisations on how they can effectively and positively improve staff availability through effective management; • Provide organisations with a basis to obtain assurance that everything possible is being done to improve attendance. A recent report from HSCIC highlights that the average sickness absence for NHS staff in England was 3.85%, for the period between April and June in 2013. This is a slight decrease compared to the
same period in 2012. The area with the highest absence rate is the north west HEE region (4.37%). The area with the lowest absence rate is the North Central and East London region (3.14%). SoR health and safeaty officer Lyn West-Wigley says: “We have produced much needed advice and guidance to encourage NHS Employers to engage with staff through partnership groups, including accredited trade union representatives, to build upon legislation which protects the health, safety and wellbeing of their most valuable resource –
RGU lecturer elected to national advisory body
Amy Wareing has been elected to a senior role on a leading advisory group for nuclear medicine practice within the UK.
Amy, who is a radiography lecturer
at Robert Gordon University (RGU), has been elected as Vice Chair of the Nuclear Medicine Advisory Group (NMAG) and will hold the position for the next four years. Amy, who is based at RGU’s School of Health Sciences, is the only Scotland-based representative within the group which meets bi-annually at the Society’s head office in Central London. NMAG consists of a panel of carefully chosen experts who advise the organisation on the development of suitable policies and strategies to support nuclear medicine practice in the UK. Amy aims to highlight the importance of a fully collaborative approach to care provision. She said:
“I’m very proud to be elected to this important role and look forward to focusing the breadth and depth of expertise of the group to develop innovative strategies to enable effective patient centred heath provision.” NMAG is currently
working on a number of projects to implement this, including a joint initiative with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) to identify standards for education.
Other projects include the continued professional development of nuclear medicine practitioners, guidance on the provision of nuclear medicine hybrid imaging services and a major review of the Society’s nuclear medicine policy and strategies.
the employees.
“It is vital that employers implement their legal, and moral obligations. Some employers regard health and safety legislation as a burden, but staff shortages through ill health is a
greater burden. It makes business sense to ensure that staff are safe and well whilst carrying out their duties.” To download the guidelines, visit bit. ly/1aryZKC
