Professionalism and passion for excellent service continue to shine through

Last month’s Radiographer of the Year awards ceremony was a dazzling showcase of best practice and commitment to patient care. Awards winners and their families mingled with Society representatives and friends to celebrate the special 10 year anniversary event at the House of Commons. SoR President Pam Black welcomed Lord

Robert Winston and the assembled guests to the organisation’s most prestigious night of the year. “Tonight we honour both individuals and teams who have been nominated by their peers and chosen by the profession for their dedication and commitment on a daily basis.” Richard Evans, CEO, thanked sponsors Fujifilm and the Society’s patron Baroness Golding. He later paid tribute to the winners. ”Though the pressure to increase recruitment to radiography has changed over the last decade, our members continue to provide essential services in rapidly developing specialities.

“Economic constraints provide many challenges in healthcare, education and research, however, professionalism and passion for excellent service continue to shine through.”

WINNER! UK

Gill Elkins was awarded UK and Midlands Radiographer of the Year. Qualifying in 1971, Gill’s careers spans 42 years of unbroken service in the NHS. In 1994, she was appointed as radiation therapy manager at University Hospital Coventry and has led the department until her recent retirement, overseeing ever increasing demands on the service and an ever expanding workload and workforce. “Gill has been an integral part of the development of radiotherapy in the area,” says nominator Linda Farthing. “She has embraced change in the most positive of ways, listening to everyone and carrying things forward with her infectious enthusiasm and a practical open mind, which has gained her the respect of all who work with her. As she retires, Gill leaves behind her a department where she has made

a true difference. “Her legacy remains in the enormous technical progress that has been achieved in this time, but also the expectation that staff will maintain her high standards to provide a patient centred service in the most warm and positive of clinical environments.”
