Society officer scoops Macmillan excellence award

A SoR professional officer is celebrating after winning a prestigious award. Sarah James is Macmillan

Patient Information Lead at the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre in Hertfordshire, as well as SoR professional officer for radiotherapy. The Macmillan Team Excellence Award 2013 was awarded to Sarah and the team for the way they have worked together to support patients not only in their own centre, but across the country. The Lynda Jackson

Centre’s team was praised for the range of services they offer people affected by cancer. These include a drop-in centre and counselling, support groups, workshops, complementary therapies and benefits advice. “We provide support,

information and guidance to our patients who attending for cancer treatment,” explained Sarah.

“Today, these services are expected as part of cancer centres and should be available to all patients, whereas 20 years ago this was revolutionary. “It helps patients in relieving any anxieties that they have; it means that they can be informed and understand what’s about to happen to them.”

Johanna Raffan was one of the centre’s first patients – she was diagnosed in 1993. She described the centre as “an oasis in the middle of the clinical world.” Former cancer patient

David Mosely added: “It was a godsend to be able to come somewhere local to talk to people who understood you, people who could deal with any of the different aspects of what a cancer diagnosis and its treatment does to you.” The work of the

centre’s volunteers was also highlighted and, as Sarah points out, through the Macmillan partnership
