“Let’s not be afraid to blow our own trumpet”
Richard Evans, SoR CEO
Everyone seems to understand World Radiography Day. There is a ‘day’ of some sort on most, if not all of the dates in the calendar. The 8 November makes sense for a celebration of imaging and therapy with x-rays. It is the day, in 1895, when Roentgen discovered the radiation that has provided our profession. For the same reason, this is also now the ‘International Day of Radiology’. (I think we can live with that. We were first, remember!) This year, over 600 packs of promotional material were requested and sent out so that departments could mark World Radiography Day and do their bit to promote the profession. ‘Who did you see today?’, asked the posters. ‘A radiographer’. Not an ‘x-ray nurse’ or ‘another doctor’. We want the public to know and to value the great contribution we make to healthcare. Quite right too. So why do we have
(relatively) so much trouble recognising RoY? Radiographer of the Year
(RoY), which celebrates teams as well as individuals, is also all about telling the world all that is great about radiography. The nominations, regional winners and over-all winners are all fantastic. The ceremony in the House of Commons is a major
highlight in the calendar and everyone loves it. But getting those nominations in every year is like pulling teeth. Why should it be so? It can’t be about the
effort involved. It is easy. And anyway, look at the effort we are prepared to put into World Radiography Day. Is it our natural reticence and modesty? Or do we shy away from celebrating one individual or team when there are so many others who don’t get recognised? Perhaps. But isn’t that daft if part of the reason for the lack of recognition is that their own profession will not do the recognising?
The point of RoY is
that you don’t have to be internationally renowned leaders to be eligible. There are other awards for these. We are just looking for examples of people who do a great job, every day. We all know someone that deserves to be nominated. We can all think of a team that are brilliant together. Who did you see today?
Every one reading this can say ‘a radiographer’ and know just what that means. We know the difference that our friends and colleagues make day in and day out, in clinical settings, in education, management and research. We know it is great work. Let’s keep on celebrating our profession on World Radiography Day. But next year... don’t forget RoY.
