The easy way to HCPC audit success

If you’re one of the 700+ radiographers selected by the HCPC to have your CPD audited, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s an easy way to complete your CPD profile and list of two years’ CPD. In September a refreshed version of CPD Now

went live to all SoR members and among the changes was an upgrade of the HCPC audit tool. The audit tool enables CPD Now users

to format their submission to the HCPC. It’s straightforward to use and the completed form can easily be printed to paper, PDF or any other printing device on your computer. The audit tool is accessed from the My HCPC tile on the CPD Now home page. Simply click the icon to add a new audit submission and fill in the fields that the HCPC requires: • Summary of recent work/practise (maximum 500 words); • Personal statement (maximum 1500 words). The audit tool will even count the words

you have written and will tell you if you have exceeded the HCPC’s limit. You then just need to select a small quantity

of your CPD which clearly evidences the HCPC standards of CPD, and which you have referred to in the personal statement. We suggest six pieces of evidence. The audit tool automatically inserts a full list of all the CPD you have done within the last two years. You’re then ready to print the submission ready to be posted or emailed to the HCPC.

While the CPD Now audit tool can make

the formatting and submission very easy, it can’t review and evaluate your CPD and it can’t check that you’ve met all five HCPC standards of CPD. It also can’t proof read your work. If you are one of the many radiographers chosen to be audited you might find our top 10 tips for audit success useful.

Top 10 tips

1. Don’t delay in getting started, especially if your CPD hasn’t been recorded/reflected on in a systematic way throughout the audit period.

2. A good first step, especially for those with work and family time pressures, is to make a timetable for completing the response, and stick to it! 3. Aim to complete the response by the end of January so you’ve time to review it and ask a colleague or two to read it through critically. 4. If there are valid reasons why you don’t feel

able to make the CPD audit return, make contact with the HCPC at once to explain your situation. 5. Speak to your manager at work to let them know you’ve been selected – they may well be able to provide you with a bit of time to support drawing your response together; it’s in their interests too, to ensure that your re- registration goes smoothly. 6. Let your colleagues know you’ve been selected – they will be sympathetic and they could well benefit from your experience if they get selected in the future. Frequently, the random audit process hits three or even four people in the same department – in which case, share the experience (but, obviously, individual records and responses are required). 7. Seek advice from your local learning representative (and if you don’t have one in your department, think about taking on the job when you’ve finished your audit response – your local SoR IR and/and or health and safety rep will be able to point you in the right direction; and departments that have one can’t sing their praises highly enough!). 8. Make sure your audit response takes good account of key watch-words and phrases in the HCPC requirements, notably the ‘how’ word relative to CPD improving the quality of your work and also relative to benefitting your

own service users (these are often patients but could be students, research participants, referrers, professional colleagues, etc.). Use the same terminology as the HCPC – doing this will help the CPD Assessor review your submission against the CPD standards and make it easy for them to pick out the elements they’re looking for. 9. Remember, CPD comes in many and diverse forms and it’s not just attending study days and courses. You’ll still have undertaken plenty of learning during the audit period, even if you haven’t gone on a course somewhere. 10. If your time is limited, resolve to do better next time and log on to www.sor.org/cpdnow and become a regular user of CPD Now! It’s the easy way to HCPC audit success.
