A quadrigeminal meningioma
The 6th National CT Head Reporting Radiographers Special Interest Group (SIG) took place in November at Birmingham City University. It was well attended by 27 enthusiastic radiographers,
all keen to learn from each other’s golden and haddock moments. The meeting was opened by our chairperson Jo Fowler who updated us on the RCR study day, detailing the need for a more streamlined service for stroke pathway. As a group and in line with NICE guidelines we also discussed the need to image the cranio-cervical junction in trauma. Throughout the day we heard very informative and educational stories from Gary Holdsworth, Genny Sandon, Ruth Clarke, Lee Unsworth, Jo and Pina, finishing with a massive challenge of 15 cases from Gary, our educational advisor who refused to let any of us ‘sit on the fence’. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event with lots of
interaction from the audience. Our next meeting will be sometime in May 2014. If you would like to learn more about the SIG please email Jo at

Obituary: Deirdre King
Deirdre King was secretary of the Nottingham School of Radiography and personal assistant to the Principal, Alan Swallow from the early 1970s until its merger with the University of Derby in the 1990s. She will be remembered by generations of radiographers and allied health professionals for her support when starting or developing their careers in the fields of medical imaging and radiotherapeutic radiography. It was she they knew they could go to for advice on any issue – professional, social or domestic. Deirdre’s secretarial skills were used to the full by the school staff and their colleagues in other institutions around the country and abroad, in working together along with the College of Radiographers to keep abreast of the many advances in technology and education during her years in post. Most importantly, however, Deirdre was a friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
An "out of this world” experience
”Out of this world!” That was how Richard Betteridge described his Work the World experience in Tanzania this summer. Richard, who is studying at University of Hertfordshire,
won the SCoR/Work the World competition in January 2013. Eight months later, he was heading off to Africa for a diagnostic radiography elective placement. Read all about it at

“Good vibes” at ARP study day
The 7th Advanced Practice study day, held in King’s Lynn on 5 October, was well received with over 50 delegates attending. Advanced practitioner
reporting radiographers Jeff Chung (see also page 22) and Nick Bithray were the new hosts of the event. “We knew we had a hard act to follow because the previous years were so
well organised with really interesting topics but we decided to give it our best shot,” says Jeff. Topics included imaging at London 2012, forensics, scoliosis, advanced practitioner domains, radiographer discharge, commenting as well as multiple case studies. “Given the positive comments we’ll probably
look to running the study day again next autumn,” Jeff explains. “A lot of work goes into organising a study day and sometimes it can be quite stressful but you do get this buzz on the day especially when the vibes are good. “I’d like to thank our
sponsors, Wolverson, Accenture and Xograph for their support”
