Ten centres chosen to deliver Selective Internal Radiotherapy

NHS England has announced the list of provider hospitals chosen to take part in a new £4.8 million initiative, aimed at increasing access to specialist radiotherapy services. The 10 centres will provide Selective Internal Radiotherapy

(SIRT) to around 220 patients a year as part of a time-limited programme called ‘Commissioning through Evaluation’. The successful centres are: Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust; The Christie NHS Foundation Trust; Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust; University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust; Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust; Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Commissioning through Evaluation will enable SIRT to be funded within defined parameters, in a relatively small number of centres, and within an explicit evaluation programme. It is anticipated that the programme will be funded for between one to three years. Dr Adrian Crellin, Chair of NHS England’s SIRT Commissioning through Evaluation Steering Group, said: “NHS England is committed to expanding access to all forms of specialist radiotherapy, and we await the outcome of this innovative commissioning programme with some anticipation, as is it will help us determine how best to deliver these important, and life-saving, services to patients in the future”.

International opportunity for new educators

The SoR is calling for applications for the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Leadership Academy for Educators Award.

A joint venture by the SoR and ASRT, the award will provide funding for a UK delegate to attend the ASRT Leadership Academy on 9 to 12 July 2014.

This opportunity to attend the three-day residential programme, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is open to a member of the

Chest reporting radiographers – will you take the challenge?

Qualified radiographers who currently report chest x-rays in clinical practice are invited to interpret a bank of approximately 100 chest x-rays on a single day. The study will examine the accuracy of chest x-ray interpretation by qualified reporting radiographers. It aims to contribute to the growing evidence base which underpins radiographer advanced practice by exploring the inherent observer variation in medical image

interpretation. Support from the CoRIPS research award has enabled an honorarium of £150 to be paid to participants, and travel into London will be arranged by the research team. If you:

• Are a qualified chest x-ray reporting radiographer; • Currently undertake chest x-ray reporting sessions in clinical practice; • Work in the NHS; And:

• Can spare one day;

• Are able to travel to (Homerton University Hospital) London.

This study has been givengiv by

SoR who is at or near the beginning of their career in radiography education. It provides significant development and mentorship for those selected to participate. The ASRT will kindly

provide accommodation and all course materials for the successful applicant. The SoR will pay travel costs up to a maximum of £650. Last year, Amy

Wareing, a lecturer of Radiography at Robert Gordon University (see also page 7), successfully applied for a place on the

course. She commented: “I can genuinely say that it was one of the best experiences, both professionally and personally, of my life and I have made some fantastic life-long friends”. To read Amy’s report of her visit, go to bit.ly/19Z602N . For information on
