Nikola Hawkins, Cheltenham General Hospital, is described as an “inspirational” person, both in her professional role and as a friend. Having completed her Masters degree and


moved on to a Doctorate, Nikola is leading her own research into the patient experience with painful bony deposits from prostate cancer and radiotherapy treatment.

The nuclear medicine team, University Hospital Wales, was nominated for expanding the PET/CT service. The tertiary nuclear medicine service has expanded within paediatrics and the team performs many unique studies for urology and oncology. It also provides rapid access to ventilation perfusion scanning for suspected pulmonary embolism, performing up to 800 scans a year, with many of them requested to report within two hours.

Philip Martindale from the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, works at one of the few major trauma centres in the UK offering a wide range of cardiothoracic services. “The cardiac catheter labs can be a demanding place to work, but Philip has embraced the challenge and huge responsibility of training his colleagues in this specialist, high pressured area of expertise,” says nominator Adele Roberts.

Nicola Brown (Eastern RoY joint winner) Mid Essex Hospitals Trust, played a crucial part in setting up and developing the emergency floor in the new PFI building. Nicola is always at work early and stays late without complaining or claiming time back. “You can call her any time at home, day or night, and she will always help with whatever problem you have,” says Victoria Greenberg who nominated her on behalf of the department. The radiotherapy treatment floor staff from the James Cook University Hospital was nominated for its tireless work maintaining high standards of patient care and treatment delivery. “The hospital has recently benefited from the addition of a


new, state of the art cancer unit and there are major renovations being made to the existing building,” says Claire Huntley. “The staff have risen to the challenge magnificently, maintaining excellence in patient care and working together to ensure that service delivery is second to none.” Northern ToY, from left: Keith Harland, Claire Huntley and Fiona Milnes.
