family & education SUMMER

Another exciting summer of entertainment awaits, with major events taking place in Blaenavon, Pontypool and Cwmbran in June and July.

 First up is the third annual Cwmbran Big Event on June 8. Last year’s event was a massive success, with about 10,000 people descending on the boating lake throughout the day for the area’s biggest celebration of culture and sport. This year’s event will feature a special

appearance by the borough’s most famous Elvis tribute act, Darren ‘Grace- land’ Jones, the star of Torfaen council’s phenomenal internet hit, In the Depot. The special winter maintenance mes-

sage, a re-working of the King’s 1969 classic In the Ghetto, has been viewed almost 500,000 times on YouTube. If that isn’t enough, the World Herit- age Festival in Blaenavon promises two

days of entertainment in the town and Garn Lakes. This year’s event takes place from June 29 to 30 and promises to have something for everyone. Finally, the entire family can head to

Pontypool on July 13 for the annual car- nival. A parade is due to travel through the town, before descending on Pontypool Park, where there will be plenty of things to do, from rides and face painting shows to entertainers, stalls and exhibitions. DETAILS WILL APPEAR IN JUNE’S TOR- FAEN TALKS. VISIT WWW.TORFAEN.GOV.UK, LIKE FACE- BOOK.COM/TORFAEN AND FOLLOW @ TORFAEN FOR UPDATES.
