Country Towns & Hamlets - Caerleon & Usk
The Caerleon Arts Festival 2013 5th to 14th July
I
t’s nearly festival time! In these dark depressing days of double dip austerity here comes the 11th annual
summer festival to set our spirits soaring. It could be the best yet - a picnic hamper of delights choc a block with entertainment, music, drama, comedy, literature and opportunities to celebrate the 150th birthday of Caerleon born writer Arthur Machen who has been inspirational to so many - Stephen King and Mick Jagger to name just two global gods who fell under his spell. Sadly, Arthur won’t be with us, but his presence will be felt as “machenalia” permeates the place. To get us in the mood there will be a
“Farmers’ Market” in the Town Hall and on the Common - on Sunday, 30th June! As sunny July unfolds the full glory of
the festival programme will be revealed - Famous Authors and the “All Wales Comic Verse Competition” in the Priory Garden; world poet Dannie Abse in the Roman Baths - unplugged; the hilarious John Hegley in the Town Hall; Blaenavon Male Voice Choir or Hum BMVC as they are known - in the Church; arts/crafts fair in the fi eld; the “Big Free” music weekend; the chance to learn more about Machen and follow in his footsteps, and more, so much more. Stay alert, boggle at the banners, watch
