CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE OF EDUCATION IN NEWPORT

eadteacher, Peter Jenkins, stated, “The transformation of the whole school has been


quite incredible and it has been a privilege to be part of it. The school has made a huge impact on the learning environment for the pupils and there has already been a noticeable improvement in pupils’ desire to succeed, educational attainment and opportunities.” Llanwern High School student, Shea


Oldfi eld, summed up the school by stating, “A £30 million school. Now we know why it cost so much, but it was worth eve- ry penny. The facilities are great.


It is a better learn-


ing environment for pupils. I felt so much smarter with the new uniform. The new school is out of this world!” Head boy, Bladimie Germain


said, “The fi rst year has been amazing. All the pupils can’t believe how lucky they are and I wish I was back in Year 7 so all my school days would have been here!” Gone is the old uniform replaced


with smart blazers giving pupils a real pride in their appearance. The new school provides pupils and parents with confi dence. CCTV and gate lock- ing systems provide full security for all pupils whilst the school has been designed with staff open plan offi ces and open plan toilets which prevent any anti-social behaviour. Who would believe that Llanwern High School has been open for a year? The new facilities have made a massive impact on Teaching and Learning and this year the school is anticipating record breaking results.


the latest technology with which to be taught and the school meal cashless card system ensures swift progress at break and lunchtime. Some of the highlights of the school’s


fi rst year included a combined Carol Concert and Christmas Fayre, pro- duced in association with the Ringland Community Association. Business and Community Manager,


Andy Knight, stated, “The new school really has to be seen to be believed. The facilities and learning environ- ment provides a safe and secure environment in which our pu- pils can to taught to the very highest of standards. The school is now being utilised out of hours too. Sports clubs using the school in- clude Newport County A.F.C., Newport Rugby Club, Newport Netball and Gwent Basketball, as


well as dance, drama, gymnastics and cheerleading groups. Also very pleasing is the local groups using the facilities, these include Spencer Boys, Llanwern Brownies and Hartridge Rugby Club. The school is also linking up with many business organisations to provide pu- pils with real life experiences to equip them for future employment. We want to put the school at the heart of the community, making our superb facili- ties available to everyone. As we move forward we hope to provide further opportunities for our students, parents and the local community, to make the


school something of which we can be even more proud.” Another special event was the


Year 11 Prom at the school held in a wonderful setting. No-one will forget the opening of the school by Wales and Newport Rugby stars, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau along with the Mayor of Newport, Councillor John Guy. Recently a fi rst year anniversary


celebration was held on 3rd May –The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Newport, Councillor John Guy, Jessica Morden, M.P., and John Griffi ths, A.M. for Cul- ture and Sport came along to help us mark this special occasion. Also in attendance was Olympian,


Christian Malcolm, a former pupil of Hartridge High School, who presented three of the school’s Football Academy students, Josh Jones, Dan Summer- fi eld and Matthew Swan with their in- ternational caps gained by representing Wales U18s in the Home International championships this season. Demand for places at the school is


increasing rapidly and the school is already handling enquires for Septem- ber 2014. The fi rst year has been incredle - the


school invites anyone to go along and see why everyone talking about Llan- wern High School.
